I absolutely adore this movie. Yes, it's a bit confusing, but I think that a film like that is the mark of a good director. I own it and I have watched it multiple times, and I still discover something new, something that I hadn't noticed before, every time I watch it. Plus visually it is absolutely spectacular, as all Miyazaki films are. My favorite of his is still Mononoke Hime, but this one is a close second.
And to answer the first question, I really prefer the original version, but I speak Japanese and don't have to read the subtitles, and I can see how having the read them would get annoying. The actor who portrayed Calcifer was hilarious. He's my favorite character in the movie.
