She also just got married to Diana Ross' son. This has been a week for weddings!

They should've been honest about this at the time. It would have probably helped mitigate the backlash. She had a decent excuse for using a backing track.

I don't know. Remember during the goodbyes when she said, "My band played the wrong song and I didn't know what to do so I decided to do a hoedown"? (Which it turns out is true, I guess. Except replace "band" with "guy who pushes the button for the prerecorded track.") She was slammed for that harder than for the actual lipsynch. The narrative was, not only can't she sing, but she's unprofessional and blames other people when things go wrong. "I threw out my voice," would have seemed like more of the same, especially since we aren't exactly talking Jennifer Hudson to begin with.
I think the only way she could have saved that moment was, when the song from the first musical spot played again in the second one, she should have just gone along with it. Start singing the same song twice - it's out of your control anyway. If they'd managed to insert the proper track partway through, you can pretend it was a fakeout or a medley or something. She never had a reputation as a good singer, a good songwriter, or anything besides the most crassly-marketed disposable fluff. If she could have shown she's a performer, that she goes with the flow and can think on her feet and still deliver a good performance, that would have bought her enough goodwill that, if she explained what really happened afterwards, people would have laughed it off and no one would have minded. But doing that stupid dance and then running off the stage made her look like a big baby with nothing to redeem her.
It's funny to think that this is what she's most famous for. (One of the dumber celeb baby names being number two). Does she even pretend to have a career any more? In singing or acting?

This was actually addressed (minus the track 1, 2 detail) on her show. But by then she was an international punchline, which was way more entertaining. And her Papa Joe instructed attempts to seek redemption made things worse. The acid "reflex" excuse and the horrendous Orange Bowl performance, followed by more excuses. The ridiculous (by today's standards) DRAMA surrounding this is funny and sad at the same time. There once was a time when people really cared about singers singing live. How adorable. Nowadays, Beyoncé can do an over the top fakity-fake lipsync of the national anthem at the inauguration of the POTUS and it's forgiven and forgotten within weeks, no punchlines necessary.

I don't follow her at all so I was surprised to find out about the marriage. Are there rumors that she is pregnant? She kind of looks it in those pictures.
ETA: Duh, I mixed up the sisters. I guess you were right - it's hard to tell the bride apart from the bridesmaids!

And then add what happened at the Orange Bowl a few months later, her singing career was over.

Even without the SNL incident, I'm not sure Ashlee would've had much of a career in music anyway. It doesn't help that her big sister - who happens to be a great singer, unlike Ashlee - is the only reason we know who she is.
It's like a Solange/Beyoncé situation, except Solange doesn't seem like a poser - remember how Ashlee dyed her hair black to separate herself from her sister and family? And her music was in the same Vanessa Carlton/Michelle Branch kind of mold. She never seemed authentic...and that was even before her nose job. Oh yeah, she also had her own reality show. Why do I know this crap?

I liked Ashlee's songs far more than Jessica's. I don't really think Jessica can sing that well anyway; she yells. I don't think Ashlee would have had a long career but she would have been in a better place than she is now.

Ashlee's first album was one of my faves in college. The last album she released is actually really good.
