After Mos Def arrived at Radio City Music Hall with his team in tow, the source said, officers on the scene approached the truck inquiring about a permit. When police were told a permit was in possession, officers let the one-song performance continue.

He didn't actually have a permit, it turns out.

I wish Cletus had been arrested for his performancew at the Teen Choice Awards. He may have had a permit but that was one cruel and evil crime against humanity.

Mos? He didn't have a permit but he told them he did...uh? Not smart. I'm sorry he had to go to jail though. They could have given him a citation or a ticket or something. Hauling him straight off to jail sounds kind of harsh....but I don't know what the laws are about performance permits and such.

Was I the only one who thought as soon as I read "Mos Def ARRESTED!" that it must've been over all that unpaid child support of his.

The video of the arrest

That poloce officer ran up to him from behind and shoved into him. That was aggressive. Mos had not been physically aggressive and it didn't look like he was going anywhere, he wasn't trying to flee the scene. What was up with that cop grabbing him like that?

And they must have seen him set up - he didn't just stand on a ledge and start rapping. How come the rushing up on the stage and manhandling him only came when he started on the George Bush is a racist, Hurricane Katrina, Iraq war lyrics.

If it was the matter of the lack of a permit I don't think they would have run up on Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears like that. If they were going to arrest them they would have done it without all the uncanned police aggression. It would be a matter of "Excuse sir. I'm about to tread you your rights..yadda, yadda." Not pouncing on the person like that.

I can only imagine what they would have done to Mos if there had been no cameras around. That cop looked fit to put him in a choke hold.

Anyway. It's hard to tell. Maybe I'm seeing things that ain't there. What is everyone else's take?
