The obvious lack of preparation for the performance bothers me more than her reaction to it. Was she even there for the sound check? I'm so conflicted about this. I feel really bad for her, but I also feel like no other star on her level is as lazy about their career... which is a travesty considering her talent. Like discoprincess said, she's becoming known for disastrous performances. As bad as I feel for her, I strongly suspect that she is entirely to blame for whatever went wrong last night. Incidentally, the tweet "she" sent out last night was the same thing Adele posted after her unfortunate Grammys performance. I use scare quotes because it has long been rumored Mariah's social feeds are captioned/handled by her manager's teenaged daughter in an attempt to sound young and connect with kids. Wasn't this pretty much confirmed on her train wreck of a reality show? Speaking of train wrecks, last night's was spectacular. Like Seinfeld once said, it was like a dry heave set to music.

Someone messaged me that, so probably. I didn't watch the show that closely, but people have been talking about it for a while. Among Mariah's fans, her current manager is kind of controversial. On another note, there's a war of words going on between the show's producer and her representatives. He says there were no technical issues. I didn't see the performance live, but after watching it online, I do wonder what the technical issue was supposed to be. I know her people can't just say "they didn't play her vocal track", but what was going on there? If the performance was supposed to be lipped, why did the production crew have playback without her vocals?

I kind of feel this is a non story. It's not like people actually paid money to see her. Most people were tourists, there to watch the ball drop. They would have been there even if no one was on stage.
Now if she had done this on stage where people had actually paid to see her, that would be an issue.

I have seen a lot of people saying that they will definitely not go to see her on tour because it's likely she'll pull the same type of shit. (I have also seen people saying she *does* pull the same type of shit on tour, including that thing of having the audience sing the song so she doesn't have to.) 35 million people watched her do that. As an advertisement for her tour, it was a disaster.

What I don't get is why she just gave up. If the sound is loud enough where people in the crowd can sing along perfectly, why can't Mariah sing along too? I know there may be a delay, but it's better to seem a little off than stand there and be picked up and carted along the stage like a potted plant while you just randomly say things. She could have told them to shut off the music and led the crowd in an acapella song. Or gotten a huge fan from the audience to come up and sing a few lines from their favorite Mariah song. Literally do anything but just stand there.

Plus the dancers' routine was perfectly synched to the music, so they didn't seem to have any problems.
I noticed that the dancer that MC is currently banging got quite a lot of camera time too. Coincidence, I think not!

If you're really singing and playing, it's MUCH easier to deal with tech glitches.
This what I do for a living, so unfortunately, I have some experience when the in-ear monitors crap out.
My band, while perturbed when a string breaks, a battery dies, or a wire on their earbuds shorts out mid-performance, simply yank at least one earbud out so they can hear the PA speakers, and muddle through to the end of the song.
In fact, it looks very much like the Biebster video linked above. My guys tell the audience jokes while we scramble to fix whatever blew up.
In Mariah's case, I will allow that there was a certain added level of urgency since it was gonna be midnight at MIDNIGHT, and not when the glitch got fixed. But she still handled it as badly as she could.
And the fact that the backing track had the high notes just irritates me no end. If you can't hit the notes anymore, there are options: ad lib a "new" melody, go for it and fake a coughing fit when it doesn't come out. Hell, transpose the song to a lower key! Keith Emerson had to relearn "Tarkus" in lower keys TWICE because Greg Lake's voice kept getting deeper over the years.
Anybody who can't do a show without backing tracks to swindle their way through a show has no business going on tour. If your entire career is being propped up by genius engineers and ProTools, then just stay in the studio. I cheat like hell because I can't sing worth a fuck, but I can manipulate my computer to create a convincing musical product. But if I am onstage, you are gonna hear my bland, boring-ass voice.

My favorite moment of the entire debacle happened on CNN, when Richard Quest, the CNN correspondent down in Times Square, came up to Kathy and Anderson and told them what happened. Anderson just giggled through the whole story. Kathy alternated between elated shock and "Dammit, why didn't that happen on OUR show?"

There is no excuse. I still remember the ear buds for Celine going out during one of her performances on the AMAS or Billboard awards. The result? She still killed it and didn't skip a beat even though she couldn't even hear herself. Mariah, learn a few things from Celine. Also how to actually take care of your voice.
