I don't know anything about mathematics so a lot of the inconsistencies where the field of mathematics is concerned didn't even register with me, much less annoy me. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this movie. I thought Gwyneth was way too old for the part and that Jake, in consequence, was too young, and that AnTony is way beyond his prime and shouldn't be in movies anymore. However, I really ended up liking Gwyneth's performance and I liked the movie. She didn't have the best chemistry with Jake but I believed their relationship (mostly due to his ability to project earnestness). I thought the weak parts were Hope Davis (I usually LOVE her but she just didn't have anything to work with) and bloody AnTony Hopkins. The film was far from perfect (I firmly believe that John Madden is a hack who got lucky twice with Mrs. Brown and Shakespeare in Love - he hasn't done much of worth since then) but I enjoyed it and thought it was worth seeing.

I liked it too. It was a thoughtful little movie and I enjoyed all the performances, although Hope Davis made me want to smack her. Perhaps that was the point?
I agree Jake Gyllenhaal was miscast, but it seems odd the he didn't play intelligent all that well. He was cast as Homer Hickham in the awesome October Sky and the role was mathematical as well. He was brilliant and it's a wonderful movie. I imagine that was partially the reason he got this role. But in between the two films he became a heartthrob and was harder to buy as a brain.

I think Jake can play intelligent, I just think he is used to playing a certain kind of intelligent character. Like Donnie Darko or Swofford in Jarhead - he is excellent at playing the kid who is the smartest guy in the room without really trying, but when he actually has to come across as someone who studies mathematics in Proof it doesn't quite work out. I didn't think he was bad, but I did have more problems believing him as a committed student of mathematics rather than a nice guy who was interested in Gwyneth's maybe crazy character.

I dig Jake Gyllenhaal and Shakespeare in Love is one of my favorite movies, so I thought I was really gonna like this, but shit, son, what a boring-ass movie. At the end I didn't even care if the chick was crazy or if she wrote the proof or whatever, I was just counting the seconds till Jake Gyllenhaal showed his pretty mug again.

Ben Shenkman played the role opposite Mary Louise Parker, he may have been a better fit than Jake. I enjoyed this a lot. Gwyneth gave one of the best performances of last year.
