They get wider releases yes, I'm not sure they're general release though. But the thing is Michael Moore has been making documentaries for years, his first big one was Roger & Me back in the 80s. He also had a well-regarded TV series back in the 90s. He's been proven as an effective filmmaker and his name is a big draw, people will see his documentaries in droves. Al Gore meanwhile was widely known as being that stiff guy who was the Vice President for a while. He had no proven drawing power, plus his documentary is about a topic that many people ignore. Whereas Michael Moore he sticks with things that are very much a part of the national consciousness when he makes them. And he has an Oscar.
