I like the movie primarily for the hunting scene. Back in those days, hunting seems to have been more labor intensive than sitting in a tree stand with a six-pack waiting for deer to walk by. Mostly what you had to do was run after your dinner for hours and hours, possible days, until you wear it out. "Jeez, don't you ever give up? Look, you got me... pant...I can't run...hack... another step...wheeze...just go ahead and shoot me already...cough."

God, if Daniel Day-Lewis was chasing after me in a forest, I don't think I'd be running for too long! ITA with the Uncas love though. I never really liked Cora at first (probably jus jellus to be honest) - although that dialogue - "What are you looking at, sir?" "I'm looking at you, miss" - just about kills me! I agree with babyfishmouth also about them looking too similar - his 'n' hers matching hairdos! You can really see it in that battle scene where they're running off hand in hand.

But I was never confused, even with both of them with long hair, who was the man! And I usually don't like long hair on guys, but it fit him, and his character, perfectly.

I heart Jodhi May. She rules. For the entire movie I was wondering why they cast this amazing actress in such a nothing part. Then the scene on the cliff came and I realized why. Notice how Michael Mann ended up using all of her closeups in that sequence, and how long those closeups stay on - when you've got such beautiful, subtle work, you don't cut away from that. And Wes Studi is right there with her matching her. I think Magua has respect for her, that she would take her own life rather than let him take it. That whole sequence reminds you that film is above all a visual medium, and you can speak volumes with images. Fantastic.
Does anyone remember the old Ben Stiller show on Fox? He did a hilarious spoof of DDL as Hawkeye as a pitchman for a treadmill, and in the whole getup he was jogging on the treadmill shouting "Stay on, no matter what occurs!" It's pretty hilarious, and someone pointed out that Ben Stiller does resemble the bastard child of DDL and a gorilla.
Prolly belongs in a Jodhi May thread, but she rocks so hard core in "A World Apart" I cannot stand it. One of my fave films of all time. She's genius. I even sat thru that wretched Daniel Deronda remake to see her.

You know what would be a great double feature? Last of the Mohicans followed by Mystery Men. Wes Studi's transformation from the fearsome Magua, cutting that Brit's heart out and showing it to him as he dies, to The Sphinx, enigmatic superhero who speaks in nothing but platitudes.
ETA: I changed my location from Colorado to The Rocky Mountain Empire. Not to throw off all you stalkers...stalk away, I'm in the book...but just cuz it's sexier. Plus all I have to do is ramp up my posts by a mere 250% and I'll be a God. The Rocky Mountain Empire more befits my impending deification, I think. You gots your Mount Olympus, you gots your Valhalla, you gots your Rocky Mountain Empire. Bwahahahahahaha!!!...cough!

The DVD version is supposed to be way different from the video version I know and love. Haven't seen it, but LoM fanatics seem to have hated the changes.
DDL is still hot, though. I sat through the crapfest that was Gangs of New York[/] for him.

I'm not even a LoM fanatic and I despise the DVD version. If you're really attached to the vidoe version than don't watch it, and take really good care of your tape.
