The original freaked me right the fuck out, and the trailer for the remake, due out in september, is promising. Creepy. They have to keep the original ending, right? RIGHT?

ACK! Isn't there anyone in Hollywood with an original idea in their heads? I'm so sick of all these remakes of fabulous movies! ([small voice] though I do really love that Dawn of the Dead remake[/small voice]) They better keep the ending! Though I can't imagine anything coming close to the original. It was so perfectly atmospheric, and Christopher Lee was AWESOME! All the Pagans were so jolly and festive that it made the Island look like a pretty fun place to live (as long as the Crops were good that season )

Damn damn damn! Why on earth are they remaking this??? There's no way they can recapture the actual, genuine horror of the first one! Honestly, I had no idea Edward Woodward could act until I saw him in this, but he was phenomenal; his horror made my horror at viewing it all the sharper.

I've seen the original ending a few times on those "list" shows ( e.g. 100 Best Movie Endings EVAH!!) and it scared the crap out of me. It made me glad I hadn't seen the rest of the movie or I'd have been curled up in a foetal position. Edward Woodward was unbelievable. Nicolas Cage can't touch him.
[spoilery chat about the ending just in case they keep it for the new one - don't read unless you already know!]I'd actually really respect if they kept the ending in the new one because endings like that just. don't. happen. any more. So it'd be a fairly brave move considering there are bound to be dozens of studio execs horrified at the very thought of an ending like that in a mainstream movie. I'd suddenly like Nicolas Cage a hell of a lot more if he had the balls to make a movie where he was killed in the end. [/spoilery chat about the ending etc. etc.]
But sadly, I think they'll remake the scary ending to make it more palatable. That's Hollywood.

I have read that the new ending is completely different from the original. Also, Nick Cage is not a Chrisitian virgin, but a conflicted man with a deadly bee allergy, and the Christopher Lee part is played by a woman.

The role of a Christian virgin, played straight, would be a lot more daring than whatever they seemed to have replaced it with.
So I guess the Christopher Lee part is now filled by Ellen Burstyn or Leelee Sobieski.

I doubt I ever would have seen or heard of Edward Woodward except for the original Wicker Man. I recall a friend of mine and I coming across this on late night t.v. once. We started out laughing at it but quickly started shuddering and staring at the t.v. with our mouths hanging open. Dear god, that creepy, erotic scene where the Britt Eckland (?) character is dancing around completely naked to taunt the guy...?
Everyone seems impressed with the ending, but I thought it was too brutal. I'm an animal lover and I got really upset. Not for the guy, so much, but for the animals.

I love that creepy scene with nakie Britt Ekland! It was just so over the top that I laughed and laughed.
Re: Edward Woodward...does anyone remember The Equalizer? That's where I saw him first and when I finally saw The WIcker Man, I quizzed my mom, "Hey, isn't that The Equalizer?!?!?!"

The animals upset me too, Bonsai. And I tend to think that part of Woodward's horror was over the fate of the animals.
