Anyone as excited as I am to see the ridiculously talented John Cameron Mitchell's follow up to Hedwig and the Angry Inch? I remember hearing about the auditions for this a few years ago and thinking, first, "no effin way would I ever audition for this" and second, "If he pulls this off, I think it could break new ground in cinema." Well, the advance buzz has been extraordinary, and I for one, can't freaking wait. I think it opens here in NYC on Wednesday.

Awww, I had never heard of this movie, but automatically assumed Britney Spears had gotten another starring vehicle. For shame ya'll, for shame.

I dunno if it's quite as revolutionary as the claims - Europe has been skirting this line for years and the "actual sex" thing has been done before (in 9 Songs, among others), but I do think Cameron Mitchell is very talented and it seems like he is mega-passionate about this project. So I'm hella intrigued.

I can't believe that I have been a member of this board for over a year and I STILL can't figure out how to link. Humiliating. Well, perhaps someone more talented than I can link to today's NY Times review of Shortbus. It seems to be getting raves across the board. JCM is such a little genius, and a very sweet man. I am beyond thrilled for him.

I've never seen Hedwig before :ashamed:
I'm pretty glad that a person such as JCM has gone as far as he did. Plus, he helped make Tarnation, so that's always a good thing.
Re: sex It's probably not as revolutionary as the buzz would have it - at least I'd like to guess. But it's probably gonna push the envelopes here. Gawd knows, we're puritanical twits here in the States.

Well, the CBC did try to fire Sook-Yin Lee for appearing and sexing in the movie. So it's not just you.

Oh, man, that sucks (and not in a graphic sexual way ). Hedwig is so awesome that when it came out, my friend was like "I'm totally straight! And two weeks agao, I hated musicals! And now two musicals are among my favoritist films ever!" ( Moulin Rouge came out around the same time). The NY Times review is here. (psst - just look at Dwan's sig *constantly* - even she screwed it up once!). It's a rave on Salon and the Village Voice as well....but only at 68% at Rotten Tomatoes, so it's kinda divisive. I just wish this was going to be playing at any other theatre in town other than the one right by the coffeeshop I work at. Because inevitably my gushing film fan-ness will take over and I'll end up with potentially awkward sex convos with customers.

Wouldn't that be a good thing, huntergrayson? Maybe you can bag a hottie!
I have had 5 different people call me in the past few days wanting to see this. Gays, straights, people seem to be pretty intrigued. Granted, I am an artist living in a big city, but still. JCM is the only gay man I'd want to have sex with. Coincidentally, I read an article with JCM today, and he said that Sook Yin-Lee said if she was going to participate in the sex-ums, John had to also. So, he ended up going down on a woman for the very first time! And liked it! HEE!

Ewwww.....!
I'm kidding, of course. But I do remember reading something way back where JCM mentioned that in the most hilarious way. It was along the lines of "Okay, I'm with a woman -- are you happy now, mom?!"
And clem, apparently someone once got fired for giving out their number. So, it may be hard (no pun intended) *not* to.
