I will wager a bet that 3.75 will get you nowhere near UCLA (it doesn't get into my local DC area schools at all). But maybe his athletic skills plus family name got him in. It's great publicity to mention his name on game day. As long as he knows that his name will be pimped like crazy on Saturday afternoons.

I think I'm with babycakes on this one. Yes, the kid has worked really hard and has earned his place in that program. But did he need to take a subsidized place that could have gone to another student who might not be able to afford college without a scholarship in place? My parents weren't rich by any stretch of the imagination but we were solidly middle class and comfortable. For that reason, they wouldn't let me apply for any of the scholarships available at my private school. Their reasoning was that they could afford the tuition; some other kid might not be so lucky and they didn't want to take an oppprtunity away from them.

I'm just happy the kid is going to college, however he gets there. So many celebs leave their kids with limited education when they could have afforded the best.
If Diddy pushed his kid toward college and used the incentive of a scholarship to do so, I can't hate on that.

A 3.75 at an academically rigorous school by a kid taking all AP classes could definitely get a look from a top college. The young man earned the scholarship and it's his, not his father's, to accept or refuse.

It mentions in the article that he went to prep school. I took that to mean that he went to a top high school.
Plus, he has extra-curriculars in the form of football, so it didn't sound implausible to me that he could get into UCLA without his dad's name.

For a NCAA calliber athlete, there tends to be more leeway as far as GPAs go, so a 3.75 at a private school seems pretty good to me. And UCLA wasn't the only school after him-I know both the University of Iowa and the University of Illinois offered him full rides as well.

Diddy went to Howard University for a year or two before he dropped out to pursue music. He's not an idiot. He once said his mother worked her butt off to put him through private school and top grades were expected. I'd guess he'd be the same way with his kids.

Meanwhile, the children of oil barons and media moguls and CEOs and God knows who else get scholarships all the time and nobody gives a shit. Makes me wonder what this is really about...

If he goes to that school and manages to do whatever it is that star football players do (win and raise the profile of the program?), then wouldn't the school get a return on its investment in him anyway?
Plus, I guess I could see Diddy secretly writing cheques to UCLA for other endeavors.
