No love for the movie that some in Chicago were convinced would rocket hometown boy Jeremy Piven into the superstar stratosphere?
It's ok, could have been much worse. The Piven plays a Vegas magician/mob mascot named Buddy "Aces" Israel, who is being forced to turn states evidence against a Mobster.
The Mob understandably takes a dislike to this plan, and assorted hired guns descend on Israel's hideout in Lake Tahoe to rub out the squealer. The FBI and the assassins square off, violence and mayhem ensues.
Buddy is an important role, and Piven is good as an arrogant, coked out, self obsessed, gangster wannabe, but it's not leading man material, it's barely a leading role, his screen time can't be much more than Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, and Ryan Reynolds have as FBI agents.
The rest of the cast is a strange mix of musicians, and mostly television actors: Common, Alicia Keyes, Ben Affleck, Peter Berg, Matthew Fox, Jason Bateman, and Taraji P. Henson.
The story itself has a few weak spots, you'll see at least one of the "twists" early on in the film.
It's only the uniqueness of the cast that elevates this above your average HBO movie. I cannot understand the thinking behind releasing this in January, it has summer action flick written all over it.

I hate Piven too but I love Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, Ray Liotta, and Ryan Reynolds more so I saw it. Plus you're kinda supposed to hate his character so it all works out. I thought it was quite an entertaining movie, even though I (who can never ever spot twists) saw every twist coming from a mile away. I was quite annoyed that they killed Affleck off so quickly but oh well. And Alicia Keys did better than I thought she would. I didn't even know Matthew Fox was in the movie until he popped up on screen, and I thought his flashback wigs on Lost were bad!

I need to hear reviews from folks who've paid money to see this. I know it won't win awards, but is it at least watchable? Just tell me it's not what it looks like: Be Cool: The Assassination Plot.

It was ok. Just don't go into it expecting more that the caliber of an action flick because it has Oscar nominated people in it.
If you have any Piven hate, he actually does a nice job....playing an asshole.
Alicia Keyes does allright she's a little stiff, but nothing like Beyonce was in her first couple of movies. And she's well lit and photographed and looks pretty hot. Common is good too.
Andy Garcia, Ray Liotta, and Ryan Reynolds are all great. It's about the most grown up serious role I've seen Ryan Reynolds in. He does not display the abs of renown, but you can't have everything.
It does skew more heavily male, with the exception of two female assassins, most of the other women in the movie play prostitutes.

I kind of want to see this. I was hesitant because of Piven, but there are so many other great people in it. Maybe I will go watch it tonight.

Ok, so maybe a matinee, if it lasts in the theater that long. I don't have strong feelings about any of the cast either way. (nice avatar, bellyache!)
