Two Summers ago I saw Phillip Seymour Hoffman outside the store where I get my hair extensions. He seemed to be deliberately trying to make eye contact with everone who passed by. Being a true New Yorker I just looked at him like I had no idea who he was.
My friends and I saw Dermot Mulroney in a diner. He was very nice but looked depressed. This was a few months ago so maybe he was sad about the (supposed) end of his marriage.

My hubby rode on a plane with the Mexican rock band Las Victimas de la Dr. Cerebro (The Victims of Dr. Brain.) It was a rough landing and everyone was terrified. Some were even praying.

I live in Pittsburgh, where umpty ump movies are filmed, but I have yet to even spot a single celebrity. However my mom was an extra in "Sudden Death" and while she didn't get to meet Jean Claude Van Damme, she got close enough to notice how utterly short he is. Since you're a fellow Yinzer, you'd probably know this one: I used to wait on John Shumway (local anchorman) when I worked at a nearby grocery store. He was really nice. Oh, and I once waited on Jerome Bettis at Kmart on the morning of a big playoff game. That was pretty cool.

Whereabouts? I'm out near Monroeville. John Shumway seems like he would be like the cool dad on the block. My dad had in irrational hatred for the guy for some reason, though. Oh, and I once waited on Jerome Bettis at Kmart on the morning of a big playoff game. That was pretty cool. You waited on The Bus? Kewlies! What was he like? Back when I worked at Shop 'n Save-roughly six centuries ago-I waited on Kathy the Shop 'n Save lady a few times. Yes, she really shops there, and yes, she's just as frighteningly perky in real life! And I'm two degrees of separation from Mike Clark from WTAE. He delivered a eulogy at my cousin Jerry's funeral. They went to the same church.

I'm in the North Hills.
Bettis was nice, but he seemed preoccupied. I can't say I blame him, and he was friendly enough. (It was right before the final playoff to see who'd go to the Super Bowl, and we were playing the Patriots. I can't remember what year it was-maybe 2002?)

When I was like 10, my friend and I met Jerry Rice at a Benihana.
My dad met Dusty Baker at a bar when he was still managing the Giants.
One of my other friends met Tom Cruise a few months ago at a movie premiere either at or near UCLA, and did not appreciate that I was rather unimpressed.

Ah, Moldy - our paths may have crossed. I rather miss the old "Dan Akroyd hit on me!" days. I never had the pleasure of having that fat old perv breathe down my neck but he did hit on my friend. Turns out he had tried the to pick up her mother back in the day. He remembered and recalled that she had "nice legs."
I often wondered what his wife and kids did while he went waddling about campus.

While we're talking about Benihana and football players, I went to the Benihana in Waikiki the week before the Pro-Bowl and I've never seen more abnormally tall, muscular human beings in one place in my life. Unfortunately I have no clue who any of them were, but one did have his blinged out 8-year-old son with him.

Oooh, what a fun thread. Let's see, I've had a few brushes with greatness...
I went to Junior High with that model/actress who is married to Benjamin Brat, Talisa Soto. She was a couple of years older than me and gorgeous. She had hair down to her bum at the time and her real name was (is?) Miriam. She left school all of a sudden and became a famous model really young...good for her! I guess her family was very poor.
I was having brunch with dh and fil here in SoCal a few years back and we kept looking at the guy in the next booth like, dang, do we know him? Was he in our building or something? Just as he and his wife were leaving, my dh figured out it was Brendan Fraser and whispered it to me. I went OOOOHHH really loud just as he walked by me, our eyes met, and he laughed at me. Heh. His wife was very uptight/tense looking. I remember that story more for me being such an idiot.
Well, maybe not brushes with greatness, after all. Mediocre-ness?
