Whoopi just got suspended CNN articlefrom The View for 2 weeks. IMO, that's really excessive and ridiculous. She expressed a thought poorly, then admitted she was wrong, made a full correction, and apologized in a couple of different ways. WTF are people supposed to do anymore?

Perhaps simply not say that the Holocaust had nothing to do with race in the first place? Maybe--just spitballing here--think "I don't know much about the Holocaust so I will refrain from saying too much about it" instead of "I don't know much about the Holocaust but I better make sure everyone knows my opinions on it"? I don't really consider this a very harsh consequence--people will still be paying attention to what she says (I would guess that her ability to get attention on social media over the next two weeks will be much higher than it is normally) and I doubt this is a significant financial consequence for her. All that's really happened is she doesn't have to go to work for two weeks, and can't air her views in one very specific format.

I'm sure the money doesn't matter, but the public reprimand of being suspended is a big deal and I don't see that happening very often to her broadcasting colleagues.
The President of ABC said the suspension is to give her "time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments." Like she's a child in the naughty corner. She's probably not easily humiliated, but I would find that humiliating.
I think it's a waste of time to try to hypothetically correct or improve her comments. Nobody can be expected to say everything perfectly all the time. Nobody. But especially not someone whose job is go on live television 5 days a week to "debate hot topics". That's like sending someone through an active minefield every day. I wouldn't blame Whoopi at all if she quit because ABC obviously doesn't have her back at all.
I've taken issue with some of her comments previously, but never thought she should be taken off of the air over them.

I think it was her Colbert explanation apology that implied a doubling down on the viewpoint that antisemitism can't be a form of racism, because Jews aren't people of color as she sees discrimination based on skin color as the identifying factor to be what comprises racism that led to her suspension.
Which is of course pretty ignorant to double down on-- First of all, there are millions of Jews of color, Middle Eastern Jews, Ethiopian Jews, not to mention many Black Jews who are either converts or who come from an African American background. And of course, Mein Kampf was all about the Aryan Race vs the Jewish race, and so much of Nazi propaganda was devoted to caricatures of Jewish facial features and how to identify a Jew based on looks. I know I've heard from a few people that their Holocaust survivor grandparents favored their blond grandchildren over the dark haired ones, because they felt those grandkids had a better chance of survival due to being able to blend in and hide if another sort of Holocaust should happen.
(Interesting aside, my brother's best friend is a Jew of color, as her parents are Yemenite Jews. She's always lived in a very diverse area of the U.S. and never traveled much, so she never stood out in any way. A couple of years ago, they went on a road trip together and stopped at a small town in the Midwest area. They went into a country music western style event, where everyone else was pretty homogenous stereotypical American Midwesterners. My brother did not stand out in any way, he is typical Ashkenazi Jewish and yes, looks Caucasian. But his friend--everyone turned around and stared at her. She looked so completely exotic and ethnic, for lack of a better word, what with her skin tone and features that it was obvious she was not from around there and was not the typical attendee at the venue. She happens to be a stunningly beautiful girl, but that's not why people were staring at her!)
I follow Bari Weiss's Common Sense Substack (she gets some interesting guest posts from people at both ends of the political spectrum) and this is one of the themes she hits on, quite a bit-- that it's potentially dangerous because it assumes that Jews are not a target for hatred, when actually FBI statistics show that the minority group that has the greatest number of reported hate crimes by far is the Jews. However if you don't follow that sort of news it's easy at be unaware of the regular reports of attacks and spewing of hatred that occurs randomly in different parts of the country against random Jews just going about their business. So yeah it probably hit a nerves with those of the executives or whoever at ABC who happen to be Jewish and that's why she's being disciplined. I'm not saying she should be, I tend to agree with Ginger, a prompt apology is enough (and it should have ended there, I think the Colbert appearance did more harm than good) but I understand where it is coming from.
In regards to Whoopi, I think it was dumb of her, and yeah if she's going to make outrageous statements on TV like that, she probably should do a bit of research first and make sure she knows what she's talking about....

I've taken issue with some of her comments previously, but never thought she should be taken off of the air over them. One of the things I've taken issue with her saying in the past has been her willingness to support suspensions and firings of other talk personalities who stepped into it. I've always wondered how on earth a person who as you rightly described goes on live televison 5 days a week to debate hot topics would join in the mob on extending no grace when mistakes are made in that arena. I hope that a small part of her reflection and learning the impact of her comments will be to rethink her position on tolerance to mistakes made by others.

Sean Penn is a special kind of suck. On a puddle shallow note he’s aging like a banana on the dashboard in July. Really earned his current face!

And we know he was bluffing with that empty threat, because there was no appearance by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Oscar night. Has he smelted his Oscars yet? He definitely getting the face that perfectly mirrors his odious personality, I’m glad his last marriage lasted a little more than a year, and I’m glad Charlize Theron ghosted his ass. President Zelensky did appear at the Grammys, so what does Sean do now? Smelt just one? ETA: His ego knows no bounds.

Every time I see pictures of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, I feel like I need a shower. This is them at the White House state dinner. The skankiness just wafts off them. It just proves that money doesn't buy class, even when you have $billions.
