Surprised this hasn't been posted yet: Miramax is no moreI know they had the occasional stumble (Shakespeare In Love), but dammit, if I saw Miramax on a film poster I knew there was a decent chance I was going to see a great movie.

Word is that Harvey and Bob/The Weinstein Group are trying to buy back the name. Which, good, they should totally have since (a) it's named after their parents and (b) they fucking built Miramax and Buena Vista/Disney really didn't.

I'm still not sure how that whole Disney takeover thing happened, I'll have to read up on that.

The Hollywood Reporter has a brief summary of the history of the company in an article on Battsek leaving (11/2). Disney acquired Miramax in 1993 and bought out the Weinsteins in 2005, so Disney has every right to the name. Battsek, who'd been heading it up since the Weinsteins left, refocused Miramax back to small budget films rather than the monsters like Gangs of New York and The Aviator which happened under the Weinsteins. And Battsek had been with Disney since '91.

The Mouse don't bring no knife to a gun fight. Heh. They probably sent Mickey to the offices to talk non-stop with his annoying, sqeaky voice until the Weinsteins surrendered, Panama -style.
