Question from a dumb American! In Australia does does the alleged abuser have to agree to some sort of order of protection in order for one to be granted? If he hadn't agreed to it could some sort of order of protection still be granted? In the U.S. an order of protection is pretty much automatically put in place when charges of domestic violence are brought up. There is no talk of finding out if the alleged abuser is cool with this.

So it appears that Michael Hutchence's mother has died.Sad to see that poor Tiger Lily was never able to establish a relationship with her grandmother. Even if Bob didn't want her visiting, why not let them speak regularly on the telephone? Seeing her death notice did make me wonder what Tiger Lily looks like now, here are some photos of the Geldofs at his father's funeral last month. Tiger looks quite tiny for thirteen, I guess she must take after Paula in that respect. And it may sound crazy, but I still think that Pixie is Michael's child too--she looks far more like him than she does Bob.

That whole story was an epic tragedy right up until the end. I'm glad she's at peace and with her husband and son again.
Tiger is the spitting image of Michael, and Pixie definitely bears a resemblance but not as much.

No, all it means is that he wasn't going to oppose it. Generally, IIRC, if police in NSW go to a domestic violence scene here they can apply for an order for the victim regardless of the victim's wants. But the problem in the Newton case is that the violence occurred in Rome and no charges were laid so, effectively, it's he said/she said and he has a right to dispute that.

Generally the police apply for the AVO on behalf of the "Person in Need of Protection." The police will often do this regardless of whether or not the protectee wants it. This appears to have been a private AVO as opposed to a police one. This was also just an interim order. It will last for 60 days or so until a full blow hearing is run ane evidence heard and permanent orders are made (or not). Quite often interim orders are made with the consent of the offender and often courts just make them automatically. Newton may oppose the permanent orders being made.

Thanks for the clarification Yoss and butterfly! Ok, I've never heard of this Spida Everitt dude but he sounds like a real douche. No wait. Douche is being too kind. Asshole would be more appropriate. At least, the radio interviewers sound appalled by his belief that if a jury doesn't convict a man of rape then his accuser ought to be publicly shamed.

Yeah, I was appalled when I read that story. I had to make an effort to forget about it, because it's so depressing. Let's make women the gatekeepers of morality so that boys can be boys!
