I read his blog, too, every day. He often annoys me, but I like his celeb gossip, and unfortunately I don't find TMZ as entertaining. And I like his cattiness sometimes (for the same reason I used to love The Bachelor and America's Next Top Model - the people's stupidity). I came here to post a blog I have recently discovered and love - The Dilbert Blog.

I know that even just invoking the name "Perez Hilton" is synonymous with "cretin" but I can't get out of my mind that video clip of his altercation with the photographer who accused him of stealing his work. His defense was less intellectually dishonest than intellectually bankrupt and, frankly, there are far too many smart people out there -- even those with whom I vehemently disagree -- to expose myself to without wasting brain synapses on him.
I feel the same way about local morning infomercial "news" shows and magazines which uncritically put Clam 'n' Hostage on the cover.
That said, yeah, I'll click on links to his site. But only when brought to my attention by clever people. Like here. {/suckup}

This subject is pretty near & dear to my heart, as I'd dearly love to find a way to make my blog profitable (or at least to pay its own way). Can you guys recommend any sites that have gone from casual blog to this-is-my-job-now blog -- that aren't Perez?

The far, far superior Pink is the New Blog and Just Jared are some examples. I don't know how to do it myself, but I don't blog nearly enough. (p.s. - I finally checked you out and you are *fierce*, girl!) Heck, my friend has her own domain and has been linked to from Deadspin (aka Gawker/Defamer's sports brother site) and she ain't making no money. It's also become totally evil and isn't really a blog anymore, but I guess one could consider AICN as an example of something that's gone from casual to total money-maker.

I was just about to post the Dooce link. I think her site's supporting her entire family now, as her husband (who has his own blog) was able to quit his job and work for himself.

It's all so confusing to me because Dooce is cute but I honestly don't think it's any cuter than half of my regular blog reads. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's cute and it's well-written but . . . I'm not blown away.
There's another blog that so many of my friends used to read and I kept seeing links to it everywhere (I'd link to it but can't for the life of me remember the address) and it was about a woman who moved to NYC from Utah? I just always thought it was boring and really really self-absorbed--but not in the funny way--more like the way that you wish they'd stop thinking that every breath they take is so meaningful and artistic. But each post would just be filled with 25+ comments of "You're the coolest! I love you so much!" She also, IIRC, was writing a book which will probably be published.
The blog explosion sort of reminds me of the whole dot-com explosion of the late 90s. Everyone is doing one. Some are great and some aren't.

Star Magazine's former gossip columnist Janet Charlton has a decent blog that isn't nearly as obcene as Perez Hilton, plus her blind items are funny and sometimes a little old.

Defamer and gawker are technically blogs, even though multiple people write for them now. They started out small and grew.
I go to Perez's site myself, but I never click on the ads. Since I work in Information Technology, it wouldn't surprise me if he used some sort of click simulator to increase the amount of clicks on his ads assuming for the ads he has he gets paid per click.

Hmmm, ironically, I think the blog you're trying to remember, is in fact, Dooce (I could be wrong). She lives in Utah and I think she moved from NYC. I don't like Dooce... I just know she made a living off it. I find her offensive and self-absorbed. I also dislike some of statements about her daughter... personally, I feel for her daughter when she's old enough to read some of the things her mom has said about her. She tries to temper it with kindness and witty anecdotes but, quite frankly, some of it is mean spirited.. IHMO. I know she's been helpful to women battling with Postpartum Depression (thankfully, that's not me), because she's dealt with it and has been very active and honest in writing about it. All-in-all, not my favorite blog.
