OK, this one is driving me crazy, so I hope you can help me. I think I've read this book within the last couple of years. There is a woman who is married to an abusive cop. He beats her up and I think she has a miscarriage. She finally leaves and goes to another town and finds a picture in an antique store that changes everytime she sees it. It seems like she could go into the picture and look around. Anyway, her husband finds her, and he chases her into the picture. If I remember right, the picture is of a setting in ancient Greece. Anyway, there is like a bull in a labyrinth or something like that. Does any of this make sense? I hope so, it is absolutely driving me nuts.
ETA: Ever lynn thank you!!! I thought I was going to lose my mind wondering!

Dasaky, I think you're looking for Rose Madder by Stephen King.
This is cool, because I'm trying to remember a book I read but I can't remember the title. It was about two half-sisters. Same father, different mothers. The one who lived with the father was kind of shy and introverted, and the one who lived with her mother was more outgoing, but the mother wasn't as rich/or refused to live off the money. So the mother dies (I think the girl kills her parents so she can go live with her rich daddy). And the shy one might have had an imaginary friend, and the other rich kids don't like her. And the evil half-sister try to gets rid of her. It's annoying that I can remember so many plot points but the title/author escapes me.

^^The Unwanted by John Saul. For some strange reason, I spent an entire summer reading all his books.

I asked about this book at several boards and haven't had any success. It is a young adult book about a girl (I think 13) who is either an orphan or left by her parents. Its probably set in the lates 70s or 80s. She lives with her uncle and his family who own a horse stable. She is considered fearful and babyish by the family. One night she rides a horse down the highway to prove to herself that she is brave. She is in love with her older cousin but he is dating someone else. At the end of the book she realizes that her uncle loves her a daughter and she finally feels secure in her new family.

This isn't a book as such, it's a character. She's called Sally Elphinstone, and her nickname is Elf. I have a feeling it's something along the lines of Malory Towers/boarding school type, or even Sweet Valley High. Any ideas?

This seems like the best thread for this. I work in a bookstore, and we've got an embargoed title coming out on September 12th- the author, title and subject matter are all a secret. They're so sure of this book that they're offering it on immediate return rules (which means they're certain they can re-sell them). There will be huge exposure on it, across the world, at the one time (no country-by-country roll out.) The weird thing is, according to our Harper Collins rep, only 2 people in the UK and Australia know who/what the book's about and around 10 people in Harper Collins US do. What I know: It's from Harper Collins It's non-fiction The author will be doing a big media blanket from September 12th onwards SKU: 202907959 (UK) ISBN: 0061138959 (US) ISBN: 0007248989 (AU) From hereMorton's book is through St. Martin's Press so it's not the Clambo book, and it's from a "proven author" so I'm guessing it's not a "My Side of the Story" celeb bio, unless they've written something before (and therefore not CMJ). Any thoughts?

My guess is it's some sort of Osama/al-Qaeda tell-all, especially with that date. Maybe Fareed Zakaria as author? (Someone with more extensive Mid-East knowledge might have more informed guesses.)
(and until you said it couldn't be, I would have sworn it was the Morton/CTC book.)

Ooh, fabulous! Clappy clappy! I love embargoed laydowns! Whee!
When I worked in a bookstore the biggest embargoed title we had was the IBM and the Holocaust flim-flam. Which tanked, yay! [It could have been interesting, but the author always rights with a gossipy, hysterical 'mad as hell' tone, which is rilly grating. Then the author called my boss an a**hole. Or was it c***sucker? I forget, but it wasn't nice.
Good times!
Also hilarious was that Anne Heche's autobio laydown was Sept. 11. Talk about tanking!
The must-read tell-all is confusing. I'm trying to suss out the clues but I'm so bad at these things, and I haven't worked in a bookstore in 3 years. Grr.

Is Tuesday new-book release day, the way it is for CDs/DVDs?
The blurb sound like the subject is US-centered, (though known internationally) and "tell-all" makes it sound like a biography. With that date maybe it's about Guliani?
