neonjungle, that second one sounds familiar. Is it maybe "And Both Were Young" by Madeline L'Engle? Or maybe it's a book by Betty Cavanna (though maybe not with the kissing, however innocent).

stargirl, thanks; it's not the L'Engle book because the boarding school was in New England...but the L'Engle book sounds good, from reviews!

scotchbonnet, I remembered the book you described, with the portrait and the feathers. "Wicked Ladies" floated into my brain today (sometimes my memory is like a magic 8 ball), and from there I was able to find the title "The Wicked Wicked Ladies in the Haunted House (Original title "the Wicked Pigeon Ladies in the Haunted Garden"), by Mary Chase. I hadn't thought about this book in probably 30 years. Looks like it's out of print, but Worldcat might have a copy.

Thank you, eclair! I immediately ordered a copy from Amazon Sellers. I'm sure I'll be disappointed when I read it, but that book's haunted me for years.

Okay, since my "dog death" lost book hasn't rung any bells, does anyone here know of a book written by a psychiatrist who survived Buchenwald, which includes discussion of the spiritual visions he had there? My dad is looking for it. Not sure if it's memoir or non-fiction.

Smilla, I thought it might be Viktor Frankl's book, Man's Search for Meaning, although Frankl wasn't at Buchenwald, he was at Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. If that's not correct, Bruno Bettelheim was in Buchenwald, though I don't know if he wrote any books about his experiences there.

Dragging this thead up to see if anyone knows this book. I read it when I was around 13, so somewhere late 70's or so. It's about a family that is driving somewhere, and either their car breaks down, or there is a terrible storm and a tree limb falls and blocks them. (I think the latter). They end up at a house where they have to stay til the storm lets up, and at first the kids believe the house is haunted, because odd things happen. They investigate, and it turns out the owner of the house is involved in some sort of crime and is trying to make the house seem haunted to scare them away.
That's all I can recall. Oh, except one of the kid characters, shortly before their mishap, talks about having a "premonition of doom", or something like that.
Thanks in advance for any help.

MrsCatHead, your second book sounds like it might be House of Stairs by William Sleator. He also wrote Singularity, one of my favorite YA sci-fi books. I think I might still have in my library.

I'd like to recommend this LJ community for anyone who is having trouble thinking of a book. I've posted there a few times, and each time someone knew what book I was talking about. They seem to have a relatively high success rate.
