The Harry Potter/LOTR crossover "Milkshake" story on Pottersues might possibly be the funniest thing that I have ever read on Teh Internet. I also like Pottersues' banner contest where readers make banners for the more ridiculous stories featured. The one for "My Immortal" is brilliant.

Someone explain to me the intrigue of reading/writing "Twilight" fan fic where all of the characters are human? To me, that is so AU, that it there is really no point to it, but apparently, it is very popular.

I don't actually have an answer to your question, it's more of a theory. I think Edward fulfills the 'hot arrogant guy at school falling for the plain girl' role quite neatly so you basically get the same variations of that story with plenty of 'witty' banter. I'm surprised by how many stories have Bella living in foster care. Maybe it's next logical step considering Charlie's parenting skills but it's another recurrent theme that surprised me.

I may as well confess right here that I write Twilight fanfic (and it's utterly shite). I keep very close to canon. Someone wrote a review saying I wrote just like Stephenie Meyer. Bwah! I obviously have a gift. I'm thinking I could easily coin it in if I wrote a teen romance novel.

It's like Buffy fanfic where everyone's human. This is why AU's can drive you mad. The writer is treating the characters like cardboard cutouts and it very rarely works.
