Cathy really only has about 5 strips.
1. Bathing suit shopping 2. With her mom 3. With her pet 4. With her boyfriend 5. At work
Roll the dice and go with whichever one comes up is the writing strategy.

I remember someone at the Old Site saying Cathy Guisewite had given a speech at her school (why, I don't know) and that as soon as Cathy got to the microphone she told everyone she'd been so nervous about giving a speech, she ate a whole box of donughts. In other words, I think Cathy Guisewite is just like the "Cathy" character in real life. That whole strip makes my head hurt. "I'm fat! I eat too much! I can't fit into my bathing suit! It's a conspiracy! I should be able to eat what I want! Clothing stores don't make my size because they want me to feel guilty! I should not feel guilty! Oooh, I just ate a bunch of doughnuts and now I feel guilty! I'm fat!" Lather, rinse, repeat.
And I just don't like FoxTrot. It concentrates too much on overdone pop culture. I am already tired of Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc. I don't need to hear Jason from FoxTrot hyping those things over and over again. If I didn't know better I'd think the creator was being paid to constantly shill for this stuff.

I'm always thinking "Why does Cathy even bother to buy a bathing suit?", but I'm guessing that she just likes something to bitch about.
Can you believe that that strip has been around for 30 years now?

I am almost ashamed to admit this, but I kinda like Cathy. I think it's to repititious, I think she can grab a subject and literally squeeze it to death until you are pleading "Please! No more big screen tv jokes! ACK!"
But, it's also usually pretty funny. She always goes for a punch line, unlike some other strips. I think it's well written. She has written some of my very favorite strips ever. I have one of her anniversary book compliations and it's hilarious. Day to day now, I read it because it can be funny, not because it usually is anymore, BUT I think at one time it was GREAT.
Maybe it's time for her to hang it up, but why would she? She's a millionaire and why give that up? I sure wouldn't.
She writes about her mom, her diet, Irving, her dogs and clothes shopping. And pretty much nothing else. If you know that going in, it doesn't bother you so much!

I may or may not have mentioned how much I hate Mallard Fillmore, but today was a perfect reason why. The guy misses the point on everything! Today was about the girl whose speech was cut when she mentioned Christ. His joke was that they cut her because she mentioned Christ, her mic was cut, but had she used his name in vain, the ACLU would be defending her. First of all, if that's the a gross overexaggeration, I'm not sure what is. Secondly, she was cut because she deviated from what was approved. They'd do that for anyone. Speeches are always pre-screened and edited before they are approved. He's just such a moron and I can't find his email, which leads me to believe it was probably taken down because he got a lot of hatemail for his dumbass logic.

I know where you're coming from, mrpancake. I hate that strip.
Here in southeastern Virginia, they have a pretty well done local paper with a feedback area on the second page. Regularly, the whole feedback section is full of people complaining about the comic strips.
They complained when Beetle Bailey was taken out. And they wanted to know what had happened to Blondie. And they all seem to have a special rage for the Boondocks (which I love!), but no one ever complains about that stupid Mallard Fillmore.

In that vein, "B.C" is such a horrid strip, I don't have the words. Every single strip is about how you'd better do what it says in the Bible or else you'll go to hell. As if that 14th century-style reasoning wasn't bad enough, the strip is called "B.C."! How can you do a strip about Christ and set it BEFORE CHRIST?! The mind, it boggles.
And I hate the fact newspapers continue to run out-of-date crap like "Dennis the Menace" and "Blondie". There's retro, and then there's just plain dated. If I read one more strip where Dennis the Menace complains about icky girls playing with dolls, I will throw something.

My local paper still has Peanuts, but rather than showing the strips from older strips from 1959, they're showing the boring-ass ones from 1993 that I've seen before. They show the 1959 strips on Sunday, though.
