I enjoyed the meltdown on FT. I even participated by starting nonsensical threads in the "Celebrities" forum. I only wish I had been clever enough to start the "Jesus" thread-- that was some funny shit. ;D Ditto. The whole crash and burn was terribly fabulous. I kept taking screen shots that night because Jesus, Your Mom, and something else random like Lunchboxes, Happy Meals, or Girl Scout Cookies would be the top three threads.

I totally agree--it was fabulous. The sad thing is, that was a whole lot more entertaining than the crap that's being posted to the site now. To the sound of "Taps" playing mournfully in the background, I go now to delete my FameTracker link from my favorites. It's now just taking up space.

I played a part in the anarchy too. I started a thread on my half-brother, who I can barely tolerate. Imagine my glee when people posted in that thread.

I thought it was kind of mean to start threads on posters that some might not have liked. However there's one that I would have gladly started a thread on had she not been a member at another board I frequented at the time.
I absolutely miss Fametracker but I don't miss the some of the bitter people that were popular just for their witty bitterness. It also made posters hesitate to even post because they were afraid of verbal evisceration. It used to make me seethe that sometimes a person was strictly outnumbered by the alpha dog's opinion and their followers, with most afraid to speak up. I can't stand the pack mentality that can sometimes form on message boards. It absolutely ruins the freedom of expression. I found that happened more and more at Fametracker as time progressed. I've learned since, it's just a fact of a board's life unless they have an even handed moderator. I also absolutely hated that when you dared to express an opinion unpopular you could get the "maybe this isn't the place for you" line. Wing did use that but only when it was obviously an ardent fan not some expressing a difference of opinion. I don't know, but I've come to think a boards success lies in the mods.

I remember a thread in the Television forum that a poster used as a platform to bully anyone who dared question or disagree with her opinion. I don't remember seeing any mod input at all and that thread was in desperate need. The hysteria (and I don't mean in a ha ha way) raged for weeks until one brave soul finally called a stop to it. Only then did Wing step in and lock the thread. The bullying poster must have been an insider because Wing usually had a low tolerance for overly aggressive posters.

Some of the posters at Fametracker were really mean. I agree that it had a mob mentality there. I remember one poor poster who dared express an unpopular opinion, and she got clobbered. She said they'd hurt her feelings and she was going to leave, and was then given even ruder replies, like, "No. Stay. Really. We care. Uh huh." It was disgusting, and Wing never did a thing about it, because most of the posters doing the bullying were longtime ones who obviously had an "in" with her.
And no...in case anyone in wondering..the bullied poster was not me. It's just an example that always bothered me about FT. Although I was certainly bullied a few times myself, and it always pissed me off that I knew I would be the one who got in trouble if I complained about it. Once some irate poster actually told me to blow him. I just replied, "Sorry, I'm not gonna blow you, I'm busy" or something.

I hope this doesn't irritate the mods (this line of discussion), but to add to what SpinsterLiz and ownlife have stated, there was a poster who pretty much owned all of the music forums. She was a big fan of hip hop, and no matter what the thread, if you said you didn't like rap/hip hop, or didn't like a particular album she did, she was ALL over you and kept shoving the whole thing down everyone's throat. It was REALLY annoying, and she made the same argument over and over. I mean, I like Madonna. And some people don't. But if they don't, I don't get my panties in a bunch and get all, "Well you're just not listening! You don't get it!" BLAH. Wing and friends never said anything to her, but she was also kind of up in the hierarchy, I think.

I hate to say it, but I thought this was pretty funny. Especially, "I Don't Like Sand (But I Do Love You)" I'm glad I stayed out of the more volatile forums at FT. I stayed mostly in publishing. It seems I missed out on alot of the drama.

I unwittingly ventured into a crazy forum once and quickly left and never came back. It was the movie manners one. Sheesh. People in there jumped all over me and then someone dared to say "Hey, maybe we're being too mean to Jensational" and then they all started attacking her. I just left, stopped reading it and never came back.
