I LOVED Gods in Alabama. Adored it. I had no idea she had a second book... I will be looking for that - thanks!
I don't even know that I'd classify it as ChickLit. A woman wrote it, it's about a woman but it wasn't frivolous at all and it dealt with very serious topics.

A woman wrote it, it's about a woman but it wasn't frivolous at all and it dealt with very serious topics. That's how I feel about Between, Georgia, Jenni. I can really only call it chicklit because of very minor chicklit criteria. And while it was funny and only occasionally silly it did discuss some serious issues. I'm glad to hear that Gods...is also good--I might have to put it on hold.

Gods is very good - I'll recommend it as well. I haven't yet read Between, though I absolutely adore the new paperback cover.
I don't think that Joshilyn Jackson is chick lit either, at least, not the old definition of it anyway. But I do think that her writing might appeal to those who enjoy chick lit, so, eh, it works!

I just got back from a week at the beach and plowed through some "chick lit". Here was the reading list:
Special Relationship by Robyn Sisman. I HATED it. Stupid story. Stupid "heroine". I wanted her plane to crash into the Atlantic at the end.
The Guy Not Taken by Jennifer Weiner. A collection of short stories. I liked it okay but plowed through it pretty quickly.
Goodnight Nobody also by Jennifer Weiner. In my opinion, this was a perfect beach book. Funny, not too deep and a sympathetic heroine. The ending was kind of weird but I am interested in reading more of her books.
Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. I liked this book a lot but I think I would have been happier with a different ending.
Sushi for Beginners by Marian Keyes. This was probably my favorite and will probably look for more of her books.
I picked all these books up based on what I read on this thread. I lurked here for a while and wrote a bunch of books down to check out at the library. Unfortunately, the library in my little podunk town didn't have a lot of what you have been talking about. I ending up buying the last two on the list at a bookstore on the beach.
I'm definitely coming back to this thread before next year's vacation, so thanks all!

I just finished Something Borrowed and I really didn't like it. To me, the characters weren't all that likeable, and I just kept hoping Rachel would get by a bus so she'd stop whining.

See, that book GRABBED me. I don't know why. It really made me emotional too. I don't know, I think I got too into it.

I actually felt sort of bad for the spoiled friend. I don't know, I feel bad when people get cheated on. That's why I liked Something Blue, just a little bit better. I felt like she experienced more growth in that. In Something Borrowed the main character started out a little whiney and entitled and then became even MORE whiney and entitled as the book went on.
But I enjoyed it.

I'm reading Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress by Susan Jane Gilman right now, and it's great. I guess it's really not "chick lit" (it's a memoir), but it's fun and a great read!

I'm reading Rachel's Holiday right now and I'm not liking it. I keep hoping something, anything will happen.

Out of all of the girls in that family, I didn't have a lot of sympathy for Rachel, but I liked it for giving me more perspective on the family dynamic and the other girls. I just thought she was a bit of a whiner about something stupid.
In Anybody out There, the most recent book we do catch up a bit with Rachel and I must confess that I like where she ends up in that book. But her growth and development to that point were exhausting.
