The Proposal was #1 on Friday with an estimated $12.5 million in North American sales.
This is the highest that *any* Sandra film - even SPEED adjusted in today's $ - has opened. Sandra's films tend to open small but have long legs, which is a rarity in Hollywood.
The film is expected to gross at least $33 million this weekend for the #1 position. Great for Sandra

I want Sandra to be my friend. I know what a ridiculous comment but I have always felt that she is the kind of person that would be so much fun to hang out with.

I dislike most of her movies (I am NOT a rom-com fan), but I think she's absolutely charming, and I'd love to see her in more non-chick-flick stuff.

Great for Sandra Great news for Sandra and for actresses. The studios claimed that "Sex and the City" and Mama Mia! were flukes last year. If a couple more female-driven movies do well, maybe the studios will wake up and we'll get more (and better) female-driven movies.

Here's an article by John Horn of the LA Times about how the chick flick distributors are actively pairing their openings with the major action blockbusters, and seeing increased profitability as a result. I keep hoping that I'll run into Sandy on the streets of Austin, we'll strike up a conversation, and become lifelong friends on the spot. In reality, I'd probably become so tongue-tied that I'd say something incredibly stupid and she'd blow me off as a total loser.

Isn't it interesting how it's "older" women like Sandra, Meryl and SJP who headline movies that open big and make tons of money? I hope the industry is paying attention.

I think that has more to do with the the younger generation not having any big movie stars. Sandra, Meryl, and Nicole are going to hang on until there are new movie stars. Reese Witherspoon is probably the closest to a young movie star and she isn't that young. Scarlett, Natalie, Jessica, etc. have yet to be able to open movies like Sandra, Nicole or Meryl can. Surprisingly, Katherine Heigl might have the best chance of becoming a movie star. Both of her movies have done well.

This relates to the Entertainment Weekly cover story a few years ago about Hollywood finding it difficult to produce new male superstars with box office success like Tom Cruise. They are also having that same problem producing new female movie stars who can bring in the box office the way that Julia Roberts, Demi Moore and Sandra Bullock used to. They tried with the next generation (Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta Jones etc) but it did not work. I suppose they are now looking to Natalie Portman, Scarlett and others but that doesn't seem to be working. It is a bit sad that Sandra had to have a hit movie with a formula (romantic comedy) that she has exploited since the beginning of her career, but at least she has a hit, I guess.

I'm happy that Sandra has a hit movie too.
As to finding the next movie superstar? I am not sure that it will ever happen again. I think part of it is because people seem to have the attention span of a gnat when it comes to entertainment. They (we) can't seem to focus enough on any one actor or actress long enough before moving on to the next big thing. And I think another part may be because actors and actresses are no longer some mysterious creatures from another world. We know too much about them to ever idolize them like people used to do. We find out that they are really no different than us. And us can now be famous too! We can be stars on reality shows and American Idol and The Hills. So there is really nothing that will make any actor or actress stand out from the rest for any long period of time.
