That's a great discription of Anne Rice novels Ripley. Of all the authors I've read, it seems like she jumped the shark harder than most.
Weird Ann Rice Moment: She was on the Today Show awhile back in one of those segments where they invite a noted author on the show along with an up-and-coming author that the noted author digs. I forget who Anne Rice recommended, but apparently they were meeting for the first time during the interview, but had talked through emails before. Wow, it was incredibly awkward-- I think Ann Curry was interviewing them about their writing, and basically both authors were acting like they were heading directly from the studio to their hotel to knock their kinky boots. They kept on giving each other these weird pick-up lines and hitting on each other while Curry sort of gawked.

I know; I remember the big deal about her taking out a full-page ad to apologize to Cruise and rave about his performance. When I saw the movie all I could think was, "WTF? What kind of accent does he think he's doing?" It sounded less French and more "Tom Cruise's 'Irish' Far and Away accent." Also, his hair made him look like an asshole.
Just confirms my suspicions that AR went batshit long ago. Remember, this is coming from someone who was once a teenage devotee of the Vampire Chronicles.

I used to be a HUGE fan of hers in the '80s, back in my dark high school days and early college. But then she started coming out with stuff like Servant of the Bones and Violin and that's when I gave up. For me, the last decent book she wrote was The Witching Hour. I happened to be living in New Orleans when that came out and I got it autographed. It was a treasured possession for a while, but now, not so much.
She's ruined a lot of my memories of her stuff by becoming so freakin' insane! I haven't tried to go back and reread any of the earlier stuff, and I wonder if I'd still enjoy it at all.

I think The Witching Hour has held up as well as Interview with the Vampire, probably her two best books. In a reread it's long, especially the first third with Rowan/Michael romance. But I still find all the historical and Talamasca sections fascinating.
TWH sequels, though, are not as readable, though I liked some stuff in there... about the sunken Shetland Island that came to be known as Atlantis, in particular. I should say though her grasp of biological science is rather dodgy, as is her grasp of contemporary terrorism -- she has a tendency to create these dubious James Bond-style villains out to take over the world or whatever, who are always easily defeated by the heroes with the conflict conveniently brushed over.

I've read Interview, Lestat and Queen of the Damned. I tried to get into Armand, but I couldn't finish it. To me reading her books is akin to eating to much candy.

And yet she goes after fan fic writers with a vigor that suggests she dial it back a notch. I know some authors aren't keen on fanfic and don't allow it, and some have been badly burned by it. But in Rice's case, it's because it offends her that people play around with HER characters. Oh, anyone remember her hissyfit on Amazon a few years back? I forget which book it was ( Blackwood Farm?), but she threw a fit over poor reviews, and dared people to continue, adding that if they truly hated the book, to send it to her address (which she openly posted) and that she would return their money, no questions asked. She insisted she was sincere and people took her up on it. Only it turns out the address was to the house in the Garden District which she had recently sold...and all of the books were sent back marked, "Return to Sender." The rant in question. It came out on October 4, 2004. It was Blood Canticle that she did the rant on. Attten-shun!! TOSS! COOKIES! Honey, all great musicians have coaches/teachers. They don't do it on their own. They're going to need a nuke to take out her ego. What is it with vampire novelists? Between her and Laurel Hamilton, the woman who introduces herself as Anita Blake, it's enough to put you off vampires for life. Deathmatch- Anne Rice vs. Laurel Hamilton! Who would you bet on?

LKH's vampires engage in too many orgies to be of any use to her, so my money is on Ol' Annie. Since she is clearly batshit crazy, she can draw her power from every well-written and barely coherent character in every single one of her books.

I can't wait until Christ the Lord is released. The reviews should be snarktastic considering the reception her recent books have gotten, and this is the autobiography of Jesus! This is the one that sent her round the bend for good!
I have to say that she's always had gorgeous cover art, but even the cover for I, Jesus looks awful.

You'd think, regarding that speech, that if she were the literary genius she clearly thinks she is, that she could write in paragraphs to make it easier to read. Those uncultured swines apparently slanging her off seemed to have no trouble with it. I didn't read the previous reviews, so if she's being slandered then of course she has right to respond, but the overall tone of her little dialogue really does give the impression that she thinks she's God's gift to literature.
