Does anyone remember reading these? I adored these books! I remember reading these in the fifth grade, and then nothing for like ten years. I walk into the bookstore yesterday to find Shelters of Stone, the next book in the series.

I've read all of them. Clan of the Cave Bear was great, the rest of the books are a bit soap-opera-ish and soft-core-porny. But they're still addicting and fun reads. You read Clan of the Cave Bear in the 5th grade? I wasn't allowed to go NEAR those books when I was that age - damn Catholic School.

I read these as a kid too and I'm still holding out for number six in the series to eventually be released although heaven knows when that will happen. I felt the series began to drag by The Plains of Passage and the endless descriptions of the plantlife became repetitive. IMO, the entire series should have ben maybe kept to four or so books instead of a projected six.

Or, as my housemate and I referred to them when we both read the entire series a few years ago, CavePorn.
Heee. Plants, plants, plants, plants, sex!, plants, plants, sex!, plants, sex!, plants, plants, plants.

The first two are still pretty good reads, but by the third, it started to get old. Ayla of No People finds people! Will they accept her or shun her when they find out she was raised by flatheads? Lather, rinse, repeat ad nauseum.

They were well concealed behind my Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High. The prehistoric porn is well....funny, I can't help giggling hysterically over Jondlear as he shifts his loin cloth to 'thrust his large manhood into Ayla's furry mound.' Heh And it gets a bit annoying by the fifth book (which I am currently reading) how Godlike Ayla is. She invents the bow and arrow and the sewing needle, she is able to figure out how to domesticate animals, and understand human contraception, she is a remarkable healer, and all the while she beautiful and loved by all In the sixth book I wouldn't be at all surprised if she 'discovers' how to turn water into wine, raise people from the dead, and is nailed to a cross.

That would actually be kind of awesome. But I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Oh yeah, that annoys me too. Funny, when you started this thread I decided to read Shelters of Stone again - I definitely need some good brain entertainment these days. The whole Goddess Ayla storyline does get rather annoying - is there anything she can't do? The book that annoys me the most, however, is the third one: The Mammoth Hunters. It started out good but then Jondalar can't stop being jealous and has a huge fit and Ayla gets with Ranec and agrees to mate with him even though she still loves Jondalar but then she dumps Ranec right before the mating ceremony and leaves with Jondalar! OMG! I so didn't see that coming! Except not. I occassionally stop by the EC Fans Forum ecfans.com/cgi-bin/forums/ultimatebb.cgi just to see what those wild-and-crazy fans are up to - especially the fan fiction section. Lots of them were very unhappy with how Shelters of Stone was written and have come up with their own versions. Most of the stories are garbage but there are a few that are genuinely interesting and well written (I had a really boring job a couple years ago - I needed something to do with all that time, and it was easy for me to copy and paste the stories into a word doc and pretend I was working on something). You wanna see something really interesting drop by that forum sometime. I love the people who pretend to be Clan members: "This woman would like to say that was a very interesting story. This woman humbly waits for another update."

I'm really dreading the new (and supposedly last) book. It's either going to be all the same Ayla Invents Everything, or daughter will grow up and invent everything else. And then horses will mate on the plains.

God, I hope the next one really is the last one. Because I can't not read it, but I know I'll hate it.
