Concerning HoL, did anyone else buy Poe's cd that coorelated with it, and then listen to the cd while trying to read the story within the story within the story all while flipping back and forth between pages? Yeah, I put down the book about halfway through, but still loved the cd. (Poe is his sister, by the way).

I have the CD, which I LOVE. I'm glad I didn't find it while trying to read the book, though, which totally and completely warped me. I would have wound up absolutely mentally buggered if I'd listened to it while reading.

Penn & Teller's Cruel Tricks is the most bizarre book I've ever read. It's not only a book about tricks- it's a "trick book" Depending on how you hold it and flip through, you will see different pages at different times making it VERY hard to find a page again if you lose it. I thought I was going insane until I realized the book was designed that way.

Well that sounds neat! I see there are copies at Amazon that are cheap, do you suggest it?

Yes, it doesn't seem to cost too much (heck, I got my copy at a used book store for under $5) and it's one of those things you can freak your friends out with. Plus, they give away some of their magic tricks.

Ooh, yeah, I thought House of Leaves was brilliant for that. (I ended up bored by the framing story about the druggie, though, and skipped a lot of it.) Yeah, it seemed like as soon as the story about the house got good and creepy, the narrative would cut back to Johnny and his drug and sex problems. Go away, I want to read about the infinite house. I still think about the house in that book a lot. I've often thought that part of the book would make a truly scary movie. I'd like to get a copy of the book so I can read the parts about the house again, but I hated the stupid junkie footnotes so much that I feel like if I buy it, I'm affirming that horrible part of the book. I really hated it. Really. The rest of the book is good, though.

Just to clarify, the Poe cd that goes with it isn't the first one that has "Angry Johnny" on it. It's the second one that has all the audio clips of her dead father talking, and the song "5 1/2 Minute Hallway".

And "Not A Virgin (Anymore)." Which rocks.

I recently rediscovered "Unleashed: Poems By Writers' Dogs" on my bookshelf. Too bad the title "Howl" was taken. Anyway, my favorite poem is by author Kathryn Walker's chihuahua, Flea.
Flea's Hymn All things brown and beautiful, All things brown and small, All things brown and difficult- The big dog made them all.
I also rediscovered "Taxi Driver Wisdom" quotes from New York taxi drivers collected by Risa Mickenberg.
I would post my favorite, but almost the whole book are my favorites. Here are a couple:
"Bike messengers-they search for death" "I'm for better always. I'm for future." "Old people, they like to get to the airport early."
There is zen like simplicity here. I like collections of weird, overheard, accidental stories. I love Overheard in New York.com and Found magazine. Anyone know of any other books along these lines?
