I'm going to have to re-read the books when I'm finished with Caroline Fraser! I believe my second grade teacher tried to explain to us how the settlers battled the natives and moved them west, but it's a lot for a child that age to even remember. IMO there was way too much emphasis on us having to remember tribe names and battles, and less emphasis on the general concept and the rightness or wrongness of it. Ma hated Native Americans, and while I don't recall Pa being rude about them, and he did admit they had reason to be angry, he was more than willing to take land from them for his own use, even though he knew the land hadn't been opened for settlement. Ma lived through the 1862 US-Dakota War and some of her neighbors were murdered and beheaded in their home, so I can understand how her attitudes about "the enemy" were formed.
