I either really enjoy his books or get annoyed, I've been more annoyed at the Alex Cross ones lately because it's more about Alex getting some action sometimes than any kind of mystery.
I loved the first flying kids book beyond measure - When The Wind Blows, not the re-tooling kids series which is particularly sub-par.
They do tend to be good travel reads because the short chapters make it easy to come and go from the story, and you don't have to concentrate a lot. But sometimes they read like even the editor didn't bother reading the book on the way to the book-every-three-months print date.

I read one of his that I hated on the beach one summer, called Jack and Jill. I think it was about a couple that did sniper-style assassinations (I read it a long time ago so I could be wrong). This one sex scene sort of ruined it for me - the killer couple were having sex and Patterson wrote something like, "She began to slide up and down his long pole," and they chanted "Jack and Jill, Jack and Jill." It's making me cringe just writing it! Ugh. It was so stupid!

I'd never read any James Patterson before, so a co-worker lent me Beach Road. I knew there was a twist ending, but when it came I was so ticked off I would have thrown the book. That is, if the book were mine and I wasn't in public at the time. The ending made no sense. It was like Patterson decided there had to be some surprise ending so he randomly made up something.
Since there seems to be a lot of love for his Alex Cross series, I might try that.

I usually read most all of his stuff, and I did like Beach Road. I just reread it because the first time, when the big twist came, I was like, "huh"? So I thought I would go back and read to see if there were any clues. I hate hate hate the flying kids crap. So freaking stupid. I just finished Cross and it was ok. I do like them because like someone said, they are easy reads and easy to come and go from. I'm not loving most of the latest as much I seemed to love them years ago. But I will still buy one if I see a new one.
