Ok, tech people, I have a problem and need some guidance. My external hard drive, which has not only all of my school stuff on it but also a ton of photos and videos, was knocked off my desk and quit working. I haven't been diligent about backing it up, and so about a year's worth of data is on this unit and only this unit. YIKES! I did some research and sent it to a company called Secure Data to diagnose. When the hard drive fell, it caused the read/write heads to fail. The estimate to repair and retrieve the data is $1,861.30. Can someone tell me if this is reasonable or not? If it wasn't for all of the photos and videos from the last year on it that would be lost forever, I wouldn't even consider it. Thanks in advance for your expertise. Who is the manufacturer of the hard drive? Western Digital does it for about $600 a year ago on their drives, but now they list "partners." Try checking with the manufacturer. Or since it's after business hour, google the manufacturer name and data recovery services. Good luck!

It’s a WD My Passport 1TB drive. I’ll contact WD today to ask. Thanks for the tip.
I’m also going to talk to my homeowner’s insurance agent. They probably don’t cover data recover, but they would cover the loss of photos and personal documents...

Oh, I HATE hard drive issues!
Mr. d, in an effort to speed up the back-up process when our old hard drive was about to die, threw ALL of my files willy-nilly into one folder and saved them that way. Apparently, opening several types of files in one folder requires some fancy, expensive software, and until I have time to figure that project out, and scrape up the money to buy the software (or hire someone to solve the problem for me), I have no access to the bulk of my children's baby pictures.
It would help immensely if Mr. d cared about any of this, but he steadfastly refuses to see the problem here. "Hey, I saved all your stuff--what's the problem?" What's the point of saving it if I can't access any of it?

I have a similar issue with Mr. Rio and my paper genealogy items, which will have been boxed up somewhere in the garage for two years come July. Sigh. I will ask him about your photo problem.

OK, tech question! My new car doesn't charge my phone very well. I'm plugging into the 12V cigarette lighter with an Amazon basics base and an Anker or maybe an Apple cord. It charges painfully slow. I used the same set up in my older car and it charged a lot faster. HELP.

I have the same issue. My old car charged my phone super fast, but my new one charges it just enough to keep it from going dead. And I drive clunkers, so the old car was a 1998 Vitari & the new one is a 2000 Toyota Camry. I'm using the same charger.

Perhaps it has something to do with the difference between an actual cigarette lighter, and a 12-volt "accessory" port. When did that change happen?
If you try to put the glowing coil lighter doodad in an accessory port, it won't ever glow, because the current is choked down. They do the same on planes-the plug will RUN your iPad, but not charge it.

Just wanted to update to let you know that I bought a new car charging plug that is 2.4 volts and an apple certified charging cable, and now it's working great. I don't know what the old one was doing but it wasn't charging...
New Question: I need a family calendar to share schedules. I have an iphone and use OUtlook 2010 on my laptop. I would like to have this shared calendar show up in both places. Ideally I would be able to update from both places, but if not, at least showing up in both would work.
Any thoughts? I used to use Cozi but now they only connect with Outlook 365, and I don't want to change to that service.

If so, those things have a reputation for starting to fail after a few months. Everything will be going well, and then the charging will start to slow down over time.

I think it was from Amazon. It was an immediate shift from one car to the other, and neither were cigarette lighters, both were outlet only.
