Why is Kevin Smith always obsessing over Ben Affleck?

Sounds like director Kevin Smith is feeling a tad snubbed by his old friend Ben Affleck.


At Monday night’s premiere of "Reel Paradise," the documentary he produced about a movie maven who screens indie films for the residents of Fiji, Smith riffed on the fact that he wasn’t invited to Affleck's hush-hush June Caribbean wedding to "Alias" star Jennifer Garner.

"I was supposed to be a groomsman and reader at the [2004] Affleck and [Jennifer] Lopez wedding," said the director of "Jersey Girl," Affleck's catastrophic big-screen pairing with J.Lo., the other Jennifer. "I figure Garner saw me as the curse that jinxed it, and thought, best to keep me as far asaway from them as possible."

But is he going to get the newlyweds a wedding present anyway?

Apparently not.

"I'm gonna [have sex with] my wife to celebrate their marriage," he said. "If it would make her feel better, she can call me Ben and I can call her Jen." (As if this fantasy couldn't be any weirder, Smith's wife is also named Jennifer.)

Smith couldn't resist elaborating: "It would be the most fictional role-playing ever. I'm no Affleck, which is bad in the bedroom, but good professionally. It's good not to be Ben Affleck professionally, because then I don't have to explain 'Gigli'" — another Affleck bomb co-starring J.Lo. — "for the next ten years."

No comment from the Affleck camp.

First of all, he certainly does have some creepy animosity towards BA. This isn’t the first time I’ve read quotes from him where he sounds either overtly hostile or passive-aggressively hostile.

Plus, How important does he think he is in the life of BA and JG to think that JG would actually consider him powerful enough to “jinx” a relationship? I’ll bet that of all the parties involved, he’s the only one who ever came up with that thought – totally pulled it out of his ass.

Lastly, I’d really, really hate to be his wife. If you want to abandon all dignity and spew your insecurities and self-loathing to the press, leave your wife out of it, at least.

Maybe Kev and Ben were closer than we know, and Kev is really hurting, missing his sweet, man love.

He wears a Kermit the Frog tee and reads Harry Potter. If I were single, he would be my dream guy.

Actually, he was my dream guy when I was single. I even named my cat after him[/sorta creepy]. But then circa the JLo era, Ben the Cat ran away. Symbolism?

Yeah, they must have been close at one time according to this paragraph that was recently deleted from a Kevin Smith Q&A that hit the web Monday:

He then told a long story about co-star Timothy Olyphant, who surprised Smith with a brusque comment and led Smith to believe -- seriously -- that he'd have to fight Olyphant to regain his honor. How'd it all start? "I'm mad at Affleck, because ... he fucking knocked up Sydney Bristowe, and he doesn't call me? That's something you call about. 'You know Elektra? I fucked her mouth.' He called me then ... because that's what friends do, they tell you that shit." Smith paused to take a sip of water and continued, "If they're really good friends, they let you take a shot. That's why I'm mad about it. I assumed it wasn't true, and I get to the set, and she flat out is. I called him when i knocked up Jen. I was like, 'Dude, I knocked up Jen!' He was like, 'I can't believe you even got laid!' He didn't call me when he got engaged. When he got this directing gig, I was like "dude that's great, just don't make it too good.' Not only did I get cast in a movie, but it's with this girl he knocked up and engaged. So I'm like fuck this dude."

My loathing for Gwhiney started when I read about her being in a non-smoking cafe and a busboy or waiter approached her and asked her to put out her cigarette. She looked down her nose at him and carried on smoking.

Given Kevin Smith's penchant for sharing every detail of his life on the Net, Ben probably didn't tell him about the baby cos he didn't want it blabbed. And given his pretty foul response, that was the right decision.
