The court case happened in 2000 and they were acquitted. It was pretty funny- my local radio station kept using the tag-line, "Tim and Kenny, FUGITIVES FROM THE LAW!!" Basically what happened was that Kenny Chesney commandeered a police officer's horse while at a concert and Tim got into a scuffle with the cops to stop them pulling him off the horse. That strikes me as dumb, since horses probably aren't going to take well to someone trying to yank their rider off. Isn't that a good way to get kicked? Yeah, but if these are police horses, I'm sure they're trained to deal with that kind of shit, since they're used in crowd control.

Did Kenny not get the cops permission? 'Cause if he didn't, the cops were right to yank him down. And why did Tim get involved?
I can't stand that song with Nelly, and I never noticed the HoYay.

That was where the case came from. Kenny claimed he had permission from a deputy's daughter, she said she only let him sit on the horse, there was testimony that she was told to lie about having given permission and the whole thing got messy. The officers involved were trying to yank Kenny off the horse, and Tim said that he pushed a cop away because he was "scared Kenny was going to go face first into the concrete." This all happened at the George Strait Country Music Festival in Buffalo. By the end of the trial, the cops came out looking pretty bad, especially with the civil suits they were filing and the guy who claimed injury and wasn't. Here's Court TV's article list Guinastasia, even if the horses are used for crowd control, I would think trying to pull their rider off might upset them. It might depend on the breed- Morgans are pretty calm, but I wouldn't try that with a Thoroughbred since they can be somewhat high-strung (I just checked and it was a Thoroughbred.) (Hail Dwanollah)

I like Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw both, but if some stranger got on one of my horses and rode off without my permission, you can bet I'd yank his ass off before he knew what had hit him if he refused my request that he get down -- it couldn't be any more upsetting to the horse than being manhandled by some clown who might or might not know how to ride.
Most of the police horses I've known or met (and I've known a few) are quarter horses, Morgans, or Tennessee Walkers, but fitness for service is predicated on an individual horse's temperament, not its breed. (Plus, police horses, as someone upthread noted, get training in how to deal with things that would freak out many civilian horses.) A particular Thoroughbred might be bombproof and the perfect police mount, whereas a particular quarter horse, from a breed ordinarily known for its even temperament, could be nutty and therefore unsuitable.
Anyway, I was disappointed to read this story back when it happened -- although I agree that the facts of the case were oddly mysterious and the cops didn't behave too well, either.

I like his songs and the fact that he still seems to have a strong marriage going on.
