Yeah, I think the Kelly-Dylan soulmate bit was the producers desperate to have Kelly end up with one of the long-standing favorite boys. She and Brandon were a much, much more beliveable pair.
If Shannen had not left, I have no doubt she and Dylan would have ended up as The Soulmate pair. I did think Shannen and Luke had real, intense sparks. Dylan and Kelly were so blah.

I blogged a three-part series about 90210 on my myspace blog. And in my "Worst Episode Ever" part, this one was #1.

I hate the Wild West episode. It's right up there with the stupid diary episode from the 60s.
Matt Durning was pretty boring as far as 90210 boyfriends go, but how about Donna's boyfriend Joe? Joe was the CU football star with the heart problem. Donna had the white hair in the stupid bob and started whispering instead of talking. zzzzzzzzz.

Ugggggggggggggh. Joe w/ the heart condition was TERRIBLE. Matt's penchant for sweater vests bugged.

Poor Joe. Didn't they find out about his heart when he, Steve and David went for a ride in that airplane?
I liked Colin, Kelly's cokehead boyfriend.

The dance where Brenda and Kelly wore the same dress was another dance, not the prom - and Brandon went with Kelly for that one. That was when they danced and he told her that he thought of her as a sister. No, that was the prom -- the junior prom. Kelly asked Brandon to be her date because she thought she would be crowned Queen (she was) and would need an escort. Ohndrea was hinting around for Brandon to go with her, and he might have, except he'd already agreed to take Kelly. That was the senior prom. And as long as we're on the subject of proms, senior prom was also one of the times I most wanted to bitchslap Brenda. Kelly and Dylan were officially a couple, and she was still licking her wounds about that. Meanwhile, some random guy asked her to the prom, and she accepted, then spent the whole night acting as if he was pestering her. WTF? He was a perfectly decent guy, who IIRC told Brandon that he'd been crushing on Brenda for a while, and was even willing to accept rebound guy status, as long as he got to spend some time with her. No reason she couldn't have made the best of things and enjoyed the evening. Did she really have to treat him like crap just to make the point that there was no one on earth for her except Dylan? I could be wrong, but I recall her storming away from the table where they were sitting just because she'd seen Dylan snuggling with Brenda. I would agree with you, if not for the ridiculous circumstances of her getting "wasted" in the first place. She had, what, half a glass of champagne, and instantly became knee-walking drunk? Again IIRC, but I think they even established that she was allergic to alcohol, so it wasn't Really Her Fault. They must have been afraid to show her finishing a drink, choosing to take another, then choosing to take another, until she was over the line, the same way they had Brandon rolling on U4EA because whatsername, Emily , slipped him a mickey, NOT because he'd chosen to dose. It was so like that in the early seasons. Bad things happened to the main cast; they never did bad things. It was almost a relief to see Kelly become a rapacious cokehead, because she did it; they didn't have her say, "OMG, I thought it was sinus medication!" (Also, do I further recall correctly that at one point during that arc, someone asked "Where's Kelly?" and Valerie said, "She's in the ladies' room deviating her septum"?)

It was the Spring Dance [or Spring Fling or whatever], with Kelly being the "Spring Queen." They probably would have made it the prom if it weren't for young David [who was still two grades behind the other folks at this point] having to be in the dance to wow everyone with his dance skills. Emily bugged me. I think it was the jersey bit that did it - when she came out with Brandon's expensive Authentic MLB jersey to paint the float. I know how much those things cost - if anyone would have dared to wear mine anywhere near a place where it's guaranteed to get dirty/stained, there would be much pain to dole out.

[My mom] thought it was a trashy soap. Of course, she was right, but still. I remember that my mom would call it a "soap", (and this was back in the high school years) which I vehemently denied. 90210 a soap? I wanted it to be taken seriously as valid entertainment! I never liked Brandon and Kelly together. The way that they broke up Kelly and Matt for good was total BS. I loved Andrea (primarily because I could relate to her), until they had her get knocked up and engage in a shotgun wedding. Point for Brenda-I think she was the only one of the gang (maybe aside from Andrea) who didn't get addicted to some type of substance. (Cigarettes don't count.)
