We watched it. Dh actually sat on the sofa and watched it with me. You know why? While the opening credits were still going there were boobs on the screen and sex! He snoozed in between sex scenes- but he was up a few times. Hee hee. Not bad- I'll tune in again. I don't think we can hope for it to be historically accurate so if you can put that out of your mind it might be good- lots of drama, sex and killing. But what makes it better than a regular soap is the graphic sex, accents and costumes. ;D
I'm in.

Count me as another one who was a wee bit disappointed with the premier. It might have been all the hype surrounding this series artificially inflated my expectations.
The first episode of Rome had me hooked. This had me thinking I'll give it a few more episodes before I decide to keep watching or stop.

I thought the second episode was much better than the first. I keep thinking that the guy who plays Buckingham would have made a better choice for Henry but the rest of the casting is pretty good. I do want to see more of Callum Blue.

I saw episode 3 this weekend. I won't spoil it, I will just say that for those who don't like it so far, it does get better. It's still no Rome but I do see signs of improvement.

Watched epi. 3 last night. Pretty good. I really am liking this show and just keeping the inaccuracies in the back of my mind.

I just finished watching Episode 5--- I can't wrap my brain around Gabrielle Anwar. She seems so out of place in this period piece. First off, she's super tan. Actually, tanrexic. She looks so skinny and tan and that doesn't fit in with the era. Secondly, he boobs look extremely fake, imo, and unless there were plastic surgeons at the time, again doesn't fit in with the era!

Hubby downloaded the whole first season for me and I watched 6 episodes last night.
Why, oh why, did they have make it inaccurate? And yeah on the casting of Henry as a young fit man. Wrong. Just wrong. I guess people don't want to see fat people having sex with young sexy women.
Anyway, I liked it overall cuz I like history but god, some of the inaccuracies were just GLARING.

What period is this show set? or rather....which wife is he on? I thought Henry VIII was a fit young man who's obesity happened later in life (wife 5 or 6). I believe, something about a jousting accident? laid him up and that's when he began to be less active and put on weight? how far off the mark am I?

He was fat then (and even fatter when he married #5), but the people behind The Tudors wanted to advertise the series as the young rockstar version of Henry's life (even though Anne was introduced in what, the second episode? So much for the first two decades of his reign). When he was young he was very tall and athletic, a big man. JRM is frail and short, a whiny aristocratic brat. He's terrible in the role, IMO.

Oh man, this show is like crack. It's so horrible, but I keep watching it on OnDemand and will continue to watch it during the second season. Seriously. This is how he looked like around the time that he was courting Anne - I think he could still pass off for just being a big guy as opposed to being a hambeast, but after 1536 (when he had that jousting accident right before the execution of Boleyn), it was all downhill. I remember watching the first couple of episodes, staring at the Duke of Buckingham, and thinking, "You'd make an awesome Henry VIII. Why aren't you Henry VIII?!" Someone upthread mentioned that he had the basic requirements: height, size, acting skill, and hair color. Also, I kindawantedtoseemoreofhim. ETA: Katherine of Aragon is another one who looks completely wrong (both with size and hair color), but the actress brings some dignity to the character, so that one is easier to overlook. I don't know what the hell they did with Mary/Margaret. What happened in real life was dramatic enough - why the heck mess with it?
