Ah, yes. KMFDM. How could I leave them out? J'adore. Also, two of my favourite bands are fronted by women. (I don't know if they qualify as metal - at least not "traditional" metal - but there's lots of guitars and screaming): "My Ruin" and "Jack off Jill". I'm usually the only person I know who's heard of them, but they're both worth a listen. Actually, Jack off Jill (who inspired my screen name) is now defunct, and the lead singer (Jessicka) now fronts a band called Scarling, who are also very, very good. My Ruin, Scarling and Jack off Jill straddle the line between metal and heavier goth music. (I'd start a thread on goth and darkwave music, but I have a suspicion I'd be the only poster waxing lyrical about Christian Death, Collide, Faith and the Muse and so forth).

Is it just me or do some of the lyrics to the songs on St Anger sound like they've been written by a 13 year old boy stuck in his bedroom after another fight with his parents? And the rest of the lyrics sound like post-rehab therapy speak?
I like the beats. And I watched the documentary and thought it was delightful. And I understand that they were going through group therapy and Het had just come out of months rehab. But man.
M'kay then.
I'm no metal expert. In fact St Anger is the first metal album I have ever listened to. And that was because of the movie.

There is a great new documentary out now on heavy metal. The first one that takes a serious look at it. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and is now on dvd. It is called "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey". It is a semi-scholarly and insightful look at the genre.

I love Metallica's "One". It's great in a car with the bass turned up.
I can see where the stereotype comes from, because I used to believe it. The parents heard all these horrible things about metal, so they gave me this warped image of someone who likes metal.
But now I love the stuff, and I'm about as far away from the stereotype as you can get.

Thanks for that link. Never heard of that book. I think I will get it. Sounds like a fun read. I am missing those headbanger days of the 80's and early 90's all of a sudden.

Nearly two pages of posts on heavy metal and no one has mentioned Pantera yet. Tsk, Tsk. Dimebag Darrell? The best metal guitarist of all time. And Phil Anselmo can yell, but the man can also SING. Gives me goosebumps. Also, add me to the list of people that would bring Master Of Puppets with them to a deserted island if they could only bring one album.

I just love that Black Sabbath's dark, heavy sound came about because Tony Iommi lost part of a finger in an industrial factory acident and had to tune down his guitar. This is why I love people from the North of England. "Well, I'm a guitarist and I lost a finger, but I'm not staying in this bloody factory town, so let's just do it this way." And why not create a whole new sound while you're at it?

Metallica (post Kill 'Em All and pre St Anger) remains one of the best metal bands in history. Zeppelin, Clapton, and Stevie Ray are also favorites. I love to play metal around my grandmother, because she justs pulls out her Bible and starts reciting passages. Heehee.
