For example: which Bjork CD would you recommend for a first-time listener?

I would get her "Greatest Hits" cd first so you can hear her best stuff and get a feel for her music to see if you like it. If you dig her, I would go for "Vespertine" and "Homogenic". Those are my favorite albums of hers.

Heh. I would have said Debut or Post, so I guess the Greatest Hits CD is perhaps the best idea. That said, I do really love Homogenic, particularly the first half. The song Bachelorette is so achingly beautiful; it gives me chills every time I listen to it. It's tied with two other songs (by Elvis Costello and Age Pryor) as my all-time favorite song in the world that I can listen to on infinite repeat.

Robbie Williams' greatest hits is always a good starting point, followed by "Swing When You're Winning". The guy may be a bit of an egotist but he's pretty flexible in terms of singing styles.

Isn't the answer to this question always "Greatest Hits"?

Isn't the answer to this question always "Greatest Hits"? Not always. I usually recommend Weezer's second album "Pinkerton" over the Blue Album. Greatest Hits don't always have the best songs, rather the more popular ones.

Well, all right, if the band doesn't have a Greatest Hits album you can't exactly recommend that.

Yeah, I would definitely recommend Debut by Bjork - listening to it right now actually and it's fab. It's the one I started off with, and is probably the least random - her later albums are more instrumental-ish, whereas Debut has some really gorgeous lyrics and catchy beats underneath - it's easy to get sucked into it. Post is also brilliant but some of it can be difficult to "get". She brings the crazy. I adore her. I just found some of her more out-there lyrics hard to get my head round, I found it a bit distracting. The Sugarcubes are good too, a bit more mainstream.

Elton John has 5,692 Greatest Hits CDs. Can someone recommend one, please? Thanks. And Queen too.
