I am a Michelle lover and was devastated when Tara won the gold. I always thought it was wrong. But, a few years ago I saw a movie about that Olympics on the IMAX screen. Seeing it so close, so in my face, that girl just oozed confidence. Very "look at me". I was blown away. Michelle was all tentative and nerves. Tara was never my favorite skater but she was an excellent competitor. That is just as important as being a good skater.
Meanwhile Tara is a footnote in skating history and Michelle is the skater that every other skater will be judged against for years to come.

The only times I ever saw Michelle skate this way was at the Olympics. I think she had built that up as the be-all-end-all in her head, and let it get the better of her.
For some goodness, youtube the 1998 and 2002 US Nationals. Makes me tear up watching it. :')

My Hate List will take hours too. I started it yesterday but realized it wasn't going to be finished anytime soon, so I PMed it to myself to finish later.
Dwan, that story about Mama Bonaly is hilarious! And the time she refused to accept her silver medal was at 1994 Worlds.
Unfortunately, I've never actually been to any skating competition ever. Sigh, I know. So what all big competitions have y'all been to?

I haven't been to any competitions, but I have been to tons of shows. One of my Things to Do on my List is to see Olympic figure skating.
Dudes, we're gonna have an All-Time Hate List, and I suspect Surya's gonna get the most votes. (And suck it, Surya, 'cos Yuka Sato KICKED YOUR ASS!)

2006 US Nationals, Ladies' Long Program. Good times. I bought the tickets hoping to see Michelle skate, but we all know how that went. Saw Sasha turn in a clean long program for once (I think). I really wanted to go to both the men's AND ladies' long, but, you know, money and all.
Plushenko is def. on my HATE list.

Plushenko and Tara are King and Queen of my Hate List, which I need to take some time to compile.
I really wish I'd gone to Nationals in 2002. They were in L.A. and the site of one of Michelle's great triumphs. I hope to go to some event for 2009 Worlds, but I know it's going to cost big bucks.
Another of my favorite Michelle performances was Nationals in 2004 ("Tosca"). Once again, Michelle was counted out and she kicked so much ass. The footwork pass and split jump near the end of the program were full of exuberance and fire--it gives me chills every time I watch it.

I've been to every level skating competition up to and including nationals.
Swan, you've got to go just once even. Live is an entirely different thing.

I've never been to a competition, just some shows (and judging by the "Suck it, Surya!" vibe from a lot of people in my section at some of the shows, she is indeed on a number of hate lists).
I should have gone when the Olympics were in Utah, which is relatively close, but it didn't occur to me to look for tickets until it was way too late. I'll have to try when the Olympics come back to Canada.

I went to the nationals when they were in Boston in 2001, the night I saw was ladies' short program and ice dancing something or other. The only things I remember were that Michelle Kwan skated beautifully as always and had a really pretty costume on, and my mom and I were convinced that there was some kind of slick spot in the ice or something because half of the skaters kept falling in the same spot. I also remember being amazed by how tiny the women all were. Particularly Beatrisa Liang. She just looked like a tiny speck of peach to me.

Dropping in to say that I hate, hate, hate Sasha Cohen and Tara Lipinski (totally forgot about her name until I came to this thread, but remember that I hated her so back then.) They are both entitled little beyotches. I like Michelle Kwan, and love Kristi Yamaguchi.
