Well, I watched the women's free skate and I guess I'll spoiler it since a lot of people won't be watching until tonight: {Spoiler}That is I'm sure the most miserable sporting event I will ever witness.
The powers that be in sport need to have a long discussion about what the terms "Protected Person" and "irreparable harm" mean.
They would have protected that girl and spared her from irreparable harm by SENDING HER HOME.
The only people the decision to let her skate benefited were all of the evil adults in that girl's life who care about nothing but medals.
Johnny Weir was translating some of the Russian and said her coach was criticizing her performance as soon as she got off the ice.
I knew this event would be somewhat unpleasant at times, but I was not prepared for how disgusting it turned out to be.
I think that Valieva, having virtually no agency in the situation she's in, muffed that performance out of a subconscious desire to not make the podium. My immediate thought was, "I guess she did everyone a favor."
I bet that kid wants nothing more than to just go home. That is what should have happened a week ago.

True to my word I didn't watch, and I won't watch tonight. But I'm reading about it and MY GOD. Spoiler here: {Spoiler}That poor, poor girl. 15 years old, abused, vilified, and now humiliated -- Eteri's first words to her were, "Why did you give up?" No hug, no sympathy, no kindness. Just immediate criticism. 15 fucking years old.
I understand that at the Olympic level, coaching sometimes has to be tough. But this is way beyond tough. Eteri is a monster.

Also only reading about it... Spoiler In addition, Trusova had a meltdown at the results and lashed out at Eteri. JFC what an absolute, heartbreaking, shit show. Eteri is a malignancy on this sport. Not sure how it will play with spoiler tags, so link to what I was talking about here.

I'm actually sitting here crying because it was all kind of traumatic and has wrecked my day. Spoiler: {Spoiler}Trusova's meltdown contributed to the sad atmosphere. Johnny Weir was trying to translate and initially said she was upset about what happened with Valieva. Later, he changed his mind and said he thinks she was upset about not getting the gold medal. I read that she's upset that she's the only member of Team Tutberidze who will leave Beijing without a gold medal.
Scherbakova quietly sitting with her stuffed animal, all alone, watching the chaos unfold as she waited for the podium ceremony, was also miserable to witness.
The non-Russian skaters attempted to bring a little bit of joy to the event, but it didn't help.
It's hard to imagine why even dedicated skating fans would want to continue watching this sport.

In fact this controversy and drama will probably give figure skating boost just like the mess with Harding and Kerrigan. I only feel bad because we are talking about teenagers - if they were adults I would just be enjoying the drama and cackling. Reminds me of the days of drama from skaters like Harding, Bobek, and Bonayli…..

I took a break from FS after Sochi because I couldn’t deal with the Eteri skaters and knew what was coming. I just started watching this season again and I truly wish I hadn’t bothered. I’m happy that I saw Nathan and the ice dance podium (sans the ROC pair) but this competition was depressing as hell.
NBC (especially Johnny and Tara) and everyone else that blew smoke up ROC’s ass can kiss mine. Sambo-70 has been a problem for years and it all blew up in their faces very publicly. But I don’t think anything happens to Eteri.

People will watch. In fact this controversy and drama will problem give figure skating boost just like the mess with Harding and Kerrigan. I really disagree - mainly because, for the most part, people don't watch figure skating anymore anyway, and all of the pro skating opportunities that thrived after the Harding-Kerrigan debacle are long dead. Also, the Tonya Harding debacle was a shit show, but it was an exciting shit show, not a depressing one. Tonya was a colorful, pugnacious, foul-mouthed adult character that you could love to hate. The players in this drama are young girls being visibly abused on TV. Truly, there's nothing at all fun to watch about it. These girls are going to go back to Russia and probably mostly never be heard from again. And four years from now there will be an entirely new batch of scared-looking, anorexic, 15-year-olds that most people have never heard of. I don't think this is going to inspire any new figure skating fans to now start tuning in to the NHK Trophy or Rostelcom Cup next fall.

I'm wondering if this might force the issue of raising minimum age to compete beyond the junior level. I think it's time for a revamping.

I don't think any Russians should have been there, the whole participating as Russian Olympic Committee thing makes zero sense to me.
