My First CD

Waaaay back in 1990, I decided that it was time. Tiime to put aside the cassette and the LP, and venture into the brand new world of.... the compact disc.

Better sound, better quality, unbreakable. More stuffff that you couldn't get in a record sleeve or those little clear plastic thingies.

But I wanted to make sure I got my money's worth. After all, they were, what, $11.99 or so back then. So my first CD was a greatest hits album, Billy Idol's Vital Idol. I don't even know why that was my first as I was never his biggest fan, but that seemed to be the right choice at the time.

So I thought it might be interesting to see what other people bought as their first CD, back when you actually had to touch something to actually play it.

It might be "Hot in the City" this summer, but you were playing something back then in those hazy 90's. What was it?

Mine was Dire Straits' Brother In Arms, so I guess that was 1986 or 1987.* And, in a nostalgic moment, I listened to it the other day. I still like "Money for Nothing" and "Brothers in Arms" (the single) but "Walk of Life"? Oy, what a truly horrible song.

* The memories are coming back now! I had a fight with my dad in the record store because I wanted some Madonna album on cd but he said that hadn't actually been recorded on laser technology but was only transferred on to disc so there was no point buying it as a cd because the sound quality wouldn't be there. So, I had to choose something that was recorded for a cd - hence, Dire Straits.

This is a fun topic.

I remember I got my first CD player for Christmas, and I went out about bought REM's "Automatic for the People" and "Hotwired" by The Soup Dragons. I want to say Basia's "Sweetest Illusion" was one of the first purchases too.

So...yeah. Totally random selection. And I think this was around 1992, so I was late jumping on the CD bandwagon.

My first CD was the Disney soundtrack for "Pocahontas". "Colors of the Wind" was my jam when I was eight man!

Wow, I don't remember, I didn't start buying CDs until way late- 1995 because my college roommate had a nice stereo. If it counts my first cassette was DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince- He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper and my second was Def Leppard- Hysteria.

Me too! Only I was 13. The CD and the CD player were my birthday presents that year.

The first CD I bought for myself was The Rembrandts LP. I was a very lame teenager.

Yossarian, that's so funny, mine was the same as yours! I also got Daylight Again by CSN right around the same time.

I haven't listened to either of them in ages, perhaps I should dust them off one of these days.

I bought a couple of CDs before I actually had my own CD player. My roommate at the time had one, and I decided it was time to convert. It was 1992 or 1993. I know I bought two at the same time, and one was Eric Clapton's Unplugged but I simply can't remember the other one. I bought that Clapton CD just for the song "Layla." I couldn't tell you any other song on that CD except for "Tears From Heaven."

The first CD I bought for myself was The Wallflowes - Bringing Down the Horse. I still love that album.

The first Mr. Sunnyhorse and I bought an Onkyo stereo with a CD player, and the first two CDs we bought to go in it were Yes' 90125 and Boston's Boston. We followed those up pretty quickly with Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms and Little Feat's Let It Roll.
