I can't stand Kaiser from Celebitchy, and she has decided that Laura Dern is her "nemesis," a trend started by Roxane Gay on Twitter where she roots for misfortune for people she's got a beef with (she never names who they are, though). Roxane has like 9 nemeses. So to be cool, Kaiser has decided that Laura just annoys her and she hates her. I guess Kaiser is my nemesis. Kaiser is my nemesis too! But I have lots of really good reasons. I liked Laura Dern's performance in Marriage Story. It was not the most subtle portrayal in the world, but I blame Noah Baumbach for that.

I just enjoyed watching her, even when she was laying it on thick. And oh, yes, I have many reasons for disliking Kaiser, but that's best left in another thread

Too true about Noah Baumbach, although, I liked the performances of Ray Liotta and Alan Alda too as lawyers too. I guess it's unfortunate that Supporting Actor is so competitive this year, and they're not seen as "due" as Dern has been because they haven't got any traction anywhere. Plus, they have internal competition with each other. I really liked Liotta even though he's presented as another typical lawyer like Dern's male counterpart, but you can't help but loving Alda, his character or him being in another movie.

I'm not a Liotta fan, but he really stood out to me as being good, maybe because it was a pleasant surprise. Alda and Dern were great, but I expected from them exactly what I got.

Laura in Stella McCartney at the SAG awards. This is so fab I'm wondering if she shouldn't have saved it to collect her Oscar.

Does anyone get Oscars anymore for their actual performances? It seems like they’re now handed out based on who’s due, or who’s getting one to make up for the performance a few years ago that was overlooked.
(I know there are great performances that are rewarded but it seems like they get it wrong way more than they get it right.)
Topic- I thought she was great in Marriage Story. Her arms looked toned! She seems like a cool lady! I guess that’s Oscar worthy?

Yeah, I think you could make an argument that it wouldn't have even been a snub if Dern wasn't nominated for an Oscar, let alone winning one. This "giving people awards stuff because we like them and they're due now" has always been wreaking havoc on the awards circuit.
I like Dern and it was an engaging performance, but IMO her actual performance has no bearing whatsoever as to why people are voting for her this year. It's basically what's wrong with the whole process in a nutshell.

I think they might be voting for Renata and the "I WILL NOT NOT BE RICH" speech on BLL. I'm just happy to see a woman over 45 working so much in prestige projects and getting nominated. I was skeptical of her as Marmee in LW, but she nailed it.
She was one of my favorite parts of Marriage Story. Honestly, I was fascinated by all the lawyers in that movie and their different approaches to divorce negotiations. Is her character based on Laura Wasser? Just a weird connection, but LW represented Ryan Reynolds in his divorce from ScarJo.

She's always had beautiful arms and shoulders. Love that this highlights them.
