As a Catholic, I applaud her for ripping up the Pope's picture. I remember thinking what an airhead fake Madonna was for making fun of Sinead doing that. Err, Madonna, Sinead is smart and has principles. Unlike yourself.

Oh yeah, Sinead has balls of steel compared to Madonna. Madonna's "outrages" and "scandals" were always so calculated. The one time she really did risk real alienation, with her "American Life" video, she scrapped it and created a new video. There was never any genuine courage there, unlike with Sinead.

It was in an interview she did with Rolling Stone (I think?). To be fair, I don't think she changed her mind over ONE day. But the thing that struck me about it is that she PLANNED the pregnancy all along but then changed her mind. I just found it really disturbing. (I'll see if I can find some online confirmation for the story.) Anyway, she's talented but she's got ISSUES.
I was also really annoyed when she started crying after she got boo'ed by a crowd of people at an event following the whole Pope fracas. (I remember Kris Kristopherson coming up and huging her.) I just thought: Well, lady. What exactly did you expect? People to embrace you with open arms? GMAB. If you want to be controversial, fine. Go for it. But don't CRY when people respond in kind.

That booing incident is actually up on Youtube. She didn't just flee sobbing, she initially tried to perform, but she only quit the stage after it became clear the noise level wasn't going to die down enough for her to do her set list. Initially, she was defiant, reciting the same song she did on SNL. Also, it's clear if you listen that she wasn't just being booed. The booers forced her not to perform, but most people were actually cheering, not booing. I don't see what else she could have done given the booers weren't going to shut the fuck up (and obviously weren't interested in understanding why she - justifiably - condemned the Pope either). I think she handled the situation with dignity and defiance.

I just watched the clip you posted. This is obviously an example of YMMV but I still found her annoying. The crowd didn't force her off the stage. She definiantly sang her song. Fine. Good for her. But it still bugs that acted all hurt and angry at their reaction. What the hell did she expect? If you're going to be controversial you've got to live with the consequences. Getting BOO'ED isn't that big a deal. She wasn't being unfairly victimized. UGH. I'm sorry, we just look at her differently. I think she's a HUGE nutbar and attention whore of the first order and I pity her kids. BUT I'll give you this much: I don't think she's a phony. She's a SINCERE nutbar and attention whore of the first order. There's nothing contrived there.
RE: The abortion story. I couldn't find anything online - only that she's had 4 children and 2 abortions.

At the time of the whole pope thing, I was a good little Catholic girl, and I was offended. Now, eeeh. The only thing that kind of irks me is that SNL was probably pissed at having to deal with the fallout.
Girlfriend's a flake and an attention whore, as said above. (IF the abortion story is true, that's majorly fucked up. I'm as pro-choice as they come, but that's still fucked up).
(According to Anthony Kiedis in his autobiography, Scar Tissue, she had originally planned to bring him to the Oscars with her-then dropped him to take Daniel Day-Lewis.)

I can't believe it! I actually found a reference to the abortion: (It's from a religious magazine but I swear I initially read it in a secular magazine) Sinead O'Connor discusses one of her abortionsAnyway, the relevant section says the following: In the Aug. 18, 1991, edition of the Austin American Statesman, rock singer Sinead O'Connor said she wrote the song "My Special Child" just two weeks after having an abortion. She also said, "It was a planned pregnancy, which I was very happy about. I was completely in love with the father of the child. ... But things didn't work out between us, and we were both unhappy. It was too much for him to be able to handle. He was young and I was on tour, and I was feeling ill all the time because I was pregnant, and I was feeling so awful and I made the decision that it would be better for everybody if I had the abortion."

I think that she's wonderful and her lyrics are amazing.

On a lighter note, I spent hours upon hours making up choreographed dances to "The Emperor's New Clothes" when I was in late elementary school and had a wall that was all mirror. Man, did I love that damn song. And that mirrored wall.
