In the later 70's virginity wasn't as much of an issue as it was in the early 70's as I remember. But that's what I meant when I said times were different. Date Rape was unheard of, and remember up until the 1980's (I believe, in the state of NY) there had to be a witness in order to prove rape.
True that excuses were made for celebrities. I remember when I was a teenager reading about a girl my age named Nicole Brown who was dating a much older celebrity, OJ Simpson. I remembered envying her and thinking it was "cool" that she got to go to cool places and hang out, and that her parents were okay with it.
Also, in the 70's adult men who went from woman to woman weren't called "man-whores." It was called "playing the field," also it was only cheating if you were married or engaged, or "going steady" you were single.

In my experience, the 70's were a hot mess. I can remember all the little girls warning each other not to go near the VW Bug that parked near the playground, because a molestor was in there who would play with himself and drag you in if you got too close. I remember these same girls warning us about certain dads.
As I got older, I had neighborhood fathers drunkenly grab my body parts and jam their tongue in my mouth when walking me home after paying me for the babysitting. I've had male friends of my parents do the same thing, once again after drinking too much. The burden always fell on me to fend them off as best I could, so it got to the point that I would lock myself in my room if my parents " entertained". And I was raised in a brand new tract home in a middle class neighborhood, it wasn't like these men were unemployed gross guys... these were the normal men who cut their grass on Saturdays. But getting into young girl's pants was very much on all their minds. But that was the part of life you didn't tell people about in the seventies. So I can see our how Samantha and her mom might have treated the incident differently, with shame and guilt and confusion in how much they might have been to blame.
BTW - The attitude we have today, about laying every little thing about molestation out in the open and not allowing even one bad touch to be dismissed is a direct result of people like me putting up with bullshit like that - no way in hell our kids are putting up with even a second of it.

My 60-something aunt was just telling me about a middle-aged friend of hers who went out with someone she met on match.com and woke up the next morning having been drugged and raped, with no memory of what had happened the night before. Except my aunt did not seem to be aware that this was RAPE. And that it was a CRIME. She wouldn't even use the word "rape" she just said "molested" or something like that. And she acted like that's just the risk you take when you agree to go out with someone.
The kicker of the story is that match.com keeps sending this woman her rapist's profile. I'm not totally sure she even notified them that he raped her!

What a horrific story, Ginger. I hope your aunt's friend seeks help. I had a traumatic experience earlier this year (not related to the discussion at hand) and it took me six months to move from denial into grief. That's why it is so hard to see victims judged based on what they do or don't do or how they react to their trauma. Everyone has different coping mechanisms.

The LA courts rejected his attempt to have his 1977 sex case dismissed... I don't know how he thought he'd have a chance of that.

Who says that money and/or fame can buy you everything? This is proof that (sometimes) the system still works.
