Timothy Dalton was there, as he was with Vanessa from 1980-1994, so he would have known Natasha since she was at least 16. Interesting. I didn't know that. Here's a pic of Dalton & Redgrave, circa 1986. In the picture, Vanessa is 48. Joely, who is now 45, bears a stunning resemblance to her mother at that age, doesn't she?

Vanessa played Joely's mom on a few episodes of Nip/Tuck. Sometimes Joely looked older than Vanessa, it was kind of weird.
Every time I read this thread I get a little misty eyed. Like nyrolabelle said, it's amazing to find that sort of community in families, especially celebrity families. Unfortunately, you (well, I don't) just don't see it that often.

Just the thought of Liam being a pallbearer just breaks my heart. It does sound like they were very tight-knit. I just don't understand life and God sometimes. Why bad things happen to good people.

Joely has her mother's looks, all right. She seems to have inherited Vanessa's height and regal demeanor, and Natasha her warmth and toughness. Vanessa played Joely's mom on a few episodes of Nip/Tuck. The guy who played Kim Cattrall's neighbour in the Sex and the City movie will apparently play Vanessa's husband in a few eps. Ah, Nip/Tuck, so shamelessly trashy! My only piece of Isherwood trivia is that Sally Bowles was named for Paul Bowles, of "The Sheltering Sky" fame. I tend to take the view that once literature is adapted, it is its own beast. So I can't compare two different, successful performances. Natasha's disturbed rendition is suitable for the intimate, slutty nightclub of the Sam Mendes production showing how that society mirrored how an individual cracked, where as Liza's self-deluded Sally was pitch-perfect for a Fosse film focused on the domino effect of how Nazism spread via the individual. The straight (ho ho) adaptation I Am a Camera with Lawrence Harvey and a very stagey, very Actor's Studio Julie Harris, is at best a curiosity.

My mom and I have a (completely unsubstantiated, of course) theory about what happened on the slope. We think that Natasha hit her head, but like so many mothers do, probably did not want to disrupt her sons' vacation by going to the hospital or having Xrays because she probably thought that she would be fine. Also, her kids are younger, she probably did not want to leave them at the resort alone. I hate to say it, but I probably would have done the same thing. Right or wrong (OK, in this case, it was tragically wrong) but that is what moms do- they put their kids first (unless they are the Octomom, of course), and usually ignore their own health. We have all been sharing stories about how we have all hit our heads and thought, "I'll be fine." Unfortunately, she wasn't, and I just feel so terrible for her and her family.

As a non mother, I don't think her reaction had anything to do with her kid (apparently only her oldest son was with her); it seems to me it was a simple case of I fell and bumped my head and she did not think it was a big deal. I've done the same thing on more than few occasions myself. And from few posts up, Joely Richardson is 43. Natasha was 45. I do think that the Redgrave genes are very strong as Natasha's two kids look more like her than Liam and Joely's daughter is a dead ringer for Joely - who is pretty much a dead ringer for her own mum.

The British stereotype of "not wanting to make a fuss" might have come into play, too. Who knows.

I don't think there was one misstep in this entire scenario. The family just handled everything perfectly. Which is not an easy thing to do when you are faced with this sort of unexpected grief. From the way they posed for pictures, to the organ donations, to the support they offered each other, it is a perfect study on how to conduct yourself as best as you can in this situation. I think that's why this is resonating with people so much because all of this just emphasizes that these are decent people. Thoroughly decent people. And it is somehow sadder when this sort of tragedy happens to decent people.

Something that is sorely lacking in modern society. I noticed the same thing about Heath Ledger's family too.
