I'm pretty sure I'm going to Hell. I have zero sympathy for any of the people on the show, and I spent the entire episode spellbound and horrified.
I absolutely loved it.

I guess the "I lived through the Depression/war" could be a reason for food hoarding, but it doesn't make it excusable (which I don't think anyone believes anyway). After all, thousands of people lived through these events and most do not hoard food.
My mom lived in Holland during WWII and speaks rarely of that time, only to say the last winter was very hard. Many people starved because there was literally no food and they ate things you'd rather not know; city people offered the family jewels to farmers (like my mom's parents) for a small bag of potatoes. Because of this experience, my mom was always careful with food, never letting anything go to waste. Most food hoarders seem to waste a lot of it.
That guy in last night's ep - all I could think was Comic Book Store Guy. That's probably what his apartment looks like (even though, I know, he's a fictional character). Glad to see he got his act together, but I like his friend's description of seeing inside the door the first time, "Dude!" The whole bathroom cleaning part was disgusting. ((shudder))

HA! Totally Comic Book Store Guy—even down to the Birkenstocks.
And what's the line between hoarding and being a massive slob? Because when Steven (was that his name?) was all, "Oh, that's my stuff," I was like, um, no, that's trash. He didn't really own anything besides old pizza boxes and Coke bottles. Poor guy. I felt bad for him. (Though I could have done without seeing the dribbling diarrhea stains on the front of his toilet.)

Yeah, what's with A&E these days? Didn't the channel start out showing reruns of BBC dramas and the like? Now it's this. That said, the show sounds sad, but I think it's a pretty common American problem. A&E started out as an arts channel (showing operas and the like) but then switched to this 'real life. drama' channel which is mainly reality shows, with a few scripted dramas like The Cleaner. I actually like the channel and think their reality shows are a lot better produced than say, Vh1's.

That lady who had all that crap in her yards, house was legally not fit to live in and the courts got involved to remove her husband from the home was INSANE. Seriously, that woman should be committed. Her children tell her that she really needs to choose her family over this stuff and she chose the stuff! (!!!!! ) I was totally laughing (yes, laughing) at the daughter who was sneaking through a 1st story window by throwing all this junk out behind her mom's back. Good! She didn't even have anything worth any value. It was just destroyed stuff. She didn't even have a floor. The floor was down to the floor boards! That poor family. They were just seriously lost. The best part was her finding things in buckets that had been frozen over and were now kept in blocks of ICE. Classic.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to Hell. I have zero sympathy for any of the people on the show, and I spent the entire episode spellbound and horrified. I absolutely loved it. I watched the food hoarder ep last weekend, and have been nauseated ever since. I keep getting that image of her fridge full of rotting meat in my head. And she isn't going to get better - watching her try to hang on to a carton of beef broth that had been swimming in the rotting meat juice was just horrifying. The guy from Louisville who had to trash his stuff, including the kid's playhouse - why have the kid there? As my sweetie pointed out, why can't mommy take little Jeffy or whoever to the park for a few hours, then come home and explain that they had to clean out the house, rather than letting him stand there and watch them smash it up and toss the wreckage into a garbage truck? "We sent your playhouse to a nice farm outside of town where there are plenty of swingsets and slides for it to play with all day long!" ETA: That guy isn't getting any better, either - did you see how cluttered the "after" shots were? Floors still covered with Banker Boxes, etc. I'm moving in a few months, and when I am going through my crawlspace deciding whether to save my old notes from college or the puzzles with only a few pieces missing, this show is going to be on my mind!

I mean, I think in order to live in that kind of squalor, you have to have some kind of mental problems going on... But perhaps diagnosing him as a hoarder was not exactly right.

Soooo... anyone watch the cat hoarder ep? Egads. I do think these people had good intentions, but it got out of control. 30+ dead cats in the house? And their neighbours should be shot for continuing to dump even more strays and unwanteds upon them over the years. What is the matter with people?

I haven't seen it yet, but as an owner of three kitties I think I'm going to be already disturbed by this episode.
And the neighbors gave them MORE cats to take care of? Oy.
