Latest news: the site is going to stay live in an archived format, so past recaps will still be accessible. There's a pinned post on the tech/issues forum on TWOP.

I will admit, I'm sad it's closing. That site helped me survive some pretty crappy jobs, LOL. I sort of feel like I felt when Fametracker went down. I'm surprised that nothing was apparently done to try and save it. I bet the more hard core members would have been willing to pay a few bucks for a paid membership. I've been a member over there for more than 10 years and had thousands of posts. A lot of the mods suck, as do the recappers but I really enjoyed some of the threads. The race and ethnicity thread was pretty great. I will probably go on a final posting spree before it's all gone.
It's good know that they will leave the site online. To this day, I occasionally read through some of the old Buffy, Angel, BSG, QAF recaps. Ah memories.

Now I can't remember if this was Fametracker or TWoP- But many moons ago there WAS a fund raising to save the site that apparently worked (temporarily). They would let people pay for banners which they could use to advertise whatever they wanted. Some folks had a Save Willow/Tara Banner because 'They are the Magic. Seriously'. And someone paid for a banner to mock their banner... which I can't remember the joke... but the punchline was 'Seriously. Monkey!' and had a picture of a monkey with glasses.
Good times. Seriously. Monkey. (Still cracks me up)

That was TWoP. It didn't work. From what I recall the site very nearly closed. There was a super-serious announcement that some of the less popular shows would no longer be recapped and the off-topic section of the forums (which I loved! They were my first exposure to forums) would shut down to save money. Then there was the deal with Yahoo and they were on more solid footing.

Glad to know the recaps will still be there, but sad that the forums won't be available for viewing. I like to read old ep threads as I catch up on seasons of Lost or Buffy that I haven't seen. I really hope something else can come along to replace it, because there's definitely a market for a message board like it, with a few tweaks, of course.

It really blew up with the displaced Hissyfitters. It kind of bugged that they weren't willing to entertain any suggestions to keep it going (people volunteered to help moderate, or donate money). Wing just said "No. It's going away, and we're not telling you why. Drop it." I'm going to miss TWOP. Where else can you find people who like to dissect old Brady Bunch episodes or wax nostalgic about the Folgers/Peter Christmas commercial every year? eta: I just found some Off Topic Blather from 12 years ago via the Wayback Machine (from when it was on mightybigtv.com). |
