And THAT is the reason the site went bye bye; mods like Howard went power mad. People became afraid to post, so they left.
Now I understand what she's doing in a way. But the reason why there's no cross talk at an AA meeting is because there is no moderator/therapist to keep the discussion going and to stop people from turning on each other. What Howard doesn't get is, that's what she's for. On a message board, you can have cross talk, but when things get too heated, then the mods come and dial it down.

Word. Also, talking about TV is not like talking about alcoholism. We're not delving in to deeply personal moments of destruction. We're talking about imaginary people and their made-up stories. So the AA template is just ridiculous. I don't need emotional safety on that level when I wander into a board for Skins or Misfits or Gossip Girl or the Bachelor. It's just not that volatile or dark. This model didn't stop the crazy from coming in (it's the internet, after all), either, but the non-cray posters made it work.

I think there was particular weirdness in threads that were about reality shows. Most people know these shows aren't truly "reality" but the lengths some people went to stalk these peoples' real lives was super-disturbing to me. I used to love the Duggar/Little People Big World/Gosselin snark but it got less snarky and more like posters being Team Matt vs Team Amy, or Team Jinger vs Team Cousin whatserface. I used to like the Hoarders thread but that got weird - and it always gets weird when one of the real people does show up on the forum (supposedly). Everyone got weirdly polite - "oh, i looooved your episode!" - really? I remember you talking shit about them last week, weird. Don't think I'll seek out the new splinter forums.

Well, since I apparently have zero self-control and can't stop myself from reading over there - I'm ready for it to close up shop! It feels like the sexism has really been amped up lately. Especially when it concerns the teen moms.
The new 16 and Pregnant episode featured a girl who got pregnant from a one night stand. You'd think that the gal was turning tricks in town square with the amount of slut-shaming they're doing. Her own mom told her she couldn't live there after the baby was born ... I guess that's how you handle a slut! The guy apparently had another baby close in age, and they're both being called bastards. WTF is wrong with people? Of COURSE it sucks, but teens have sex, and don't always think clearly. Short of rape or murder, I'd never kick my minor child out of the house. Because of sex.
Now, I just need to stop myself from following all these holier-than-thou bitches to where ever else they go!

There's one on the Real Housewives of Atlanta thread and all she can do is say how much she hates Nene Leakes. I swear the woman must have done something to her personally; I'm like Nene is just some silly character on a reality show, but this woman (I'm sure it's a woman) keeps writing pages of how much she hates her. What a loon.

Back in the early days of reality TV (when people thought it was real) my son was on one of the elimination type dating shows. He was one of the finalists, and the boards were wicked bitchy and mean, as they can be. I'd go on and identify myself as the mom just to calm that fuck down.

They're creepy with the Duggars. There are a whole bunch of them who use nicknames for the kids as though they, you know, KNOW them. And yesterday there was a fight about just how disabled preemie Josie is. Why? There was about an 8 second video of her laughing. Now that's some damning shit right there!

I've known a few people on shows like that, too! The stories they tell... Also, at one of my first jobs I worked with a lady whose brother was a script writer for the Real World. Hearing that that exists and is an actual job sort of blew the illusion for me.

I've been disillusioned ever since that older fellow on one of the early Survivor seasons - Roger, I think? - had this whole drama about how he was afraid to swim, and he was supposed to dive off a cliff, and would he or wouldn't he? DRAMA! And he did dive! Whoopee! ... except it wasn't him. It was a stunt double.

Now at previously.tv they have several different threads devoted to the Duggars. I just checked and so far there are 11 threads aside from the episode threads, including one about the "other" kids and Grandma. Grandma doesn't get her own thread. Ageism!!
