And they just keep getting worse ...
And ...
Is it ME who is going crazy? Slut shaming, rape shaming, children understand spankings more than words? What the holy fuck?

Son was on Average Joe, the first one. The premise was that the hot girl picks from normal type guys, the twist was after they got down to two or three guys, they brought in model type hunks and now the average guys were competing against the hunks. (Spoiler, she picked a hunk). Son actually auditioned for a show about funny guys, not a dating show, so that was the first switcheroo.
Anyway, they were still trying to keep the lid on these shows being real, and he was playing a nerdy character. They'd edit him to be a good guy hero one week, the next he was a total clueless loser. I remember one episode where they warned him and us to have support available during the show ("you won't like it") and even a therapy session for him if he wanted it...then totally did a hatchet job on him.
Anyway, you can imagine how the boards lit up after that. I told him to not read the boards, and as I said, I'd go on TWoP and a few other boards and say I'm his mom, and people would be nice and stop threatening to have him offed for his own good.
In those earlier days everyone assumed that there was no editing. Even the participants on the show didn't know that they could (for instance) legally take video of someone crying about his friend dying and have it edited to look like he was crying because the girl didn't pick him for a date.
It was a pretty stiff learning curve for a new to the West coast kid. After the show, where he actually came out looking good, he was in a ton of magazines, even make People mag for best kiss of the year.
I advised him to not go the reality show route if he wanted to be taken seriously in the biz. They would hire these guys to go to parties, and do voice overs for other reality programs, but these people just seemed to end up with sad careers as nobodies and it didn't look like a good path.
Anyway, it was a long time ago, but there is a Doonesberry character that came out of it, Zipper is my son, complete with clothing options and backstory, so that's kind of neat.

WOW! That's fascinating! Thanks for sharing that, famvir. Is your son an actor now? (You mentioned "if he wanted to be taken seriously in the biz".)

I know we have several Hollywoodland denizens on the board, so Son's journey is probably familiar to them. He worked as a Directors Asst, then did a ton of background work. (He even had a few lines with Lindsey Lohan in a Herbie movie.) He got his SAG card and has done a mishmash of acting, editing, writing, and production. He's in a band (played House of Blues, Viper room, etc) and went through the whole Groundlings program, has his own improv group (one of his improv troupe just started working for SNL.) He's acted in a number of things, most recently Bones, a WWII movie for the History channel, and he was just in a Super Bowl commercial, but it's a little here, a little there.
He also ran a language camp in Brazil and Switzerland for Concordia College, worked for Nat Lampoon, worked at Disney, and is Festmeister for Alpine Village, where they recently hired him full time to do publicity and promotion.
So yeah, a mishmash, and it looks like he is in a really study job, but he can still do the odd acting gig. I mean, on paper his life has been pretty amazing!
But LA is a pretty weird place. Both my sons live there. My other son's wife has been in a number of TV shows and does voice work on the side, her mom had been on The Office and several commercials and also does voice work. It seems everyone is in the biz!
Hope I haven't bored y'all too much. I haven't thought about this stiff in years.

Very cool and interesting, famvir, thanks for sharing!
So are AA meeting big on slut shaming, misogyny, using nick names instead of real names and all the other stuff that goes on at TWOP that Howard ignores? Somehow I don't think so. When TWOP is gone I wonder if Howard will just go from AA meeting to NA meeting to OA meeting, interupting the speakers and admonishing them for the littlest perceived infraction.

Cool story, famvir! I'm sure I'd know exactly who your son is ... I'm a reality show slut (speaking of slut shaming - let me shame myself for never being able to resist one)!
Don't forget fat shaming. There's a teen mom who just had a new baby and, gasp, gained weight. Well, they hate her every move anyway, so calling her a fat sumo wrestler is just fine and dandy. I see an average girl who had a hard life, still makes mistakes, and gained baby weight. Those bitches want to chase her with torches. And of course the 600 pounders are all so disgusting that it makes them gag and dry heave. Turn the fucking channel!

I think the issue with so many at TWoP is that they have VERY black and white thinking. There's only one way of doing everything and if you do it another way, then you're wrong.
They're also very big on shaming people over there. They also think that only certain people are deserving of anything.
Come to think of it, maybe it's not a bad thing that place got shut down.

Lord, no. What/whom did he play on Bones? Pleasesayitwasthecorpseoftheweek ... You're sweet Shalamar. He played a pickle purveyor on Bones, so not a dead body. He has this handle bar mustache and it seems to be getting him hipster parts, as well as old timey parts. Since he determined long ago that he's not an "actor" but does a lot of MCing, editing and production type stuff, this is a very nice sideline for him.

Yeah, I lurk a lot on the Real Housewives threads, and this happens so much. A lot of pearl-clutching and dissection of the cast members' private lives, which would be fine if they weren't so damn insistent and tinfoil hat-y about it. "The gossip blogs posted this, so CLEARLY it means this!" Or worse, when they start accessing addresses and other private info to prove their point that so-and-so is an awful person. I just saw the last episode of New York, and there's a slew of comments ripping some of the wives to shreds based on things they didn't even actually say on the show... the posters were misquoting the wives and then ripping them to shreds.
