The film "Woo" was on TV the other day and Foxy's cameo reminded me how scaaary she used to be with her terrifying three feet long ghetto nails and bright briiiight teeth. Girlfriend had bitchface for days and nails for weeks. That said her first album is underrated- granted she's somewhat obsessed with her own 'slanted eyes' and she was never as likeable as Kim, but she had a really nice flow, even if the words weren't her own (which never really bothered me- she has such a good feel for delivery that she actually out Jay-Zd Jay-Z on I'll Be and beat Nas at his own schtick on his own Affirmative Action). I always liked how vulnerable she could be on stuff like If I and Letter To The Firm, and even on her massively dissapointing second album she did some special stuff (though it's a shame she felt the need to flip her flow into such a Kim impersonation).

Supposedly she has a new album coming out this year which was rumoured to have a collabo with Lauryn, which I doubt will happen, and I've heard the buzz track Art Of War is decent. I may actually check it out- her third album, when she changed her style again to a more Carribean flavour, was pretty good if nowt special. Her days of '96 rap It girl are well and truly over, though.

Also, does anyone know about her background in Brooklyn? In interviews she always claims to come from a respectable, middle class background but I've heard so much stuff about her fucking with drug addicts in school and generally being the poster child for hood rat. I still can't believe she got away with being just 16 when she made her first album- I know it was covered up but in this Internet dominated celebrity age that would be exposed in a second.

I've always wanted to go up to her, say the simple words "Natina Reed", and then run away as fast as I can.

What's the story behind this? My first thought would be that the album had lyrics that wouldn't be considered "appropriate" for a teenager. They lied about her age? And who's Natina Reed? *very ignorant*

Natina Reed was the rapper in the trio Blaque. They were produced/affiliated with Left Eye of TLC. Foxy's ex-fiance Kurupt had a baby with Natina. IIRC, the lovely couple, K+N, put out an annoying song called It's Over (Sorry), which sounded like nursery rhyme-type music, in which Natina either blasted Foxy or insinuated a few things. K+N were also engaged for a while, but then he dumped her, too.

I'm not really a fan...but this is disturbing. You are 26 years old, a rap artist, and you wake up deaf one morning.

Foxy Brown is going deaf, suffering severe and sudden sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. "I started breaking down in tears and screaming and I couldn't even hear myself scream," she told People magazine. Even though she's not responding to treatment, she has hope that she'll rap again. "I know God is working on me," she said. "I'm on a personal journey. I believe God wants to be the only voice I hear right now. I know I will be all right."

What Foxy Brown remembers most about the morning of May 23 is the eerie quiet. The night before, the rapper had fallen asleep with the television blaring, but when she got up, no sound seemed to be coming from it. "I pressed the volume to maybe 60. Nothing," says Brown. " I ran outside to my truck and honked the horn. Nothing. I ran back inside and dialed a number on the phone. Nothing. Then I started breaking down in tears and screaming and I couldn't even hear myself scream. That's when I knew there was a problem."

Three days later Brown was diagnosed with severe sudden sensorineural hearing loss, a little-understood condition that affects one in 10,000 people without warning, often the result of a viral infection. Most suffer loss in only one ear and, when treated early, the condition can be reversible. But Brown has lost her hearing in both ears and has, so far, not responded well to treatment. "Her case is severe," says Dr. Anil Lalwani, an otologist whom Brown has consulted. "In only 1 or 2 percent of the cases are both ears affected."

I read the article in People. It's very sad. She had a surgery done to both ears and she has 20 or 25% hearing back. But it's not getting better.

Maybe, I'm wrong in thinking, but I can't help but question whether she was taking Oxy a la Rush Limbaugh, who also was suddenly becoming deaf.

I thought of that too, Soul, but the physician's statement is that it is a rare viral infection. I was also wondering if she could get the same sort of implants that Rush got. They are expensive, but they seem to have worked well for him and saved his broadcasting caree. I don't know if they are applicable for every type of deafness, though.
