I just watched Miss Americana and I actually like Taylor more than I did before. Granted, that was a pretty low bar, but she came across in a positive light. Near the end she acknowledged that that saying about being frozen at the age you become famous was true for her and she had "a lot of growing to do to catch up to 29." Anyway, worse ways to use an hour and a half.

Little Women I really enjoyed the time jumps in this. I really liked that they showed the growth of feelings between Jo and Bhaer. I loved that the women were able to portray through their acting the seven year jump in time. I think that Timothy failed there. I know that he was immature for most of this but I never did see him as grown up even when he and Amy had a child at the end. Saoirse and Florence were definite standouts for me. So was Laura Dern.

Finally saw Parasite last night and damn it was amazing, it took some turns I was not expecting and I liked it a lot more than I thought it would. I hope it does well at the Oscars. I rented it last night and, damn, it did not disappoint. I actually feel like I got more out of it because of the subtitles, as I had to have my entire attention on the screen.

I need to know how scary and/or disturbing Parasite it is before I watch it. I saw Snowpiercer several years ago and I hated it, mainly because it was so upsetting and I have never forgotten the most disturbing parts of it. Captain America ate a baby! They were eating roach jello! They made a child be part of a machine! And a bunch of other terrible stuff! So I need to know if Parasite is more or less disturbing than Snowpiercer.

It doesn't have any sci-fi elements to it at all (the title is a metaphor,) so those types of scary things aren't there. Snowpiercer is far more disturbing.
In my opinion Parasite is more of a black dramedy than a horror movie. I do recommend watching it during the day though, so you have enough time to process it before you go to bed. It's a thinker.

TTMR and I went to see Birds of Prey and really enjoyed it. It had kickass women and cool stunts. We thought it was a great popcorn flick.

Birds of Prey last week. Agreed it was kickass. Black Canary was a particular standout for me. I loved her. The fight scenes were fantastic.
Fantasy Island this week. Completely ridiculous. I was expecting more of a horror show but it really wasn't. It was...okay. lol

I'm about a month late but we just watched Parasite. I definitely liked it, but would not have guessed that it would win best picture. Some very vague spoilers: {Spoiler}I gather that there's supposed to be some tension between whether the poor family or rich family is the 'real' parasite, but...I don't know, that didn't come through for me. I mean paying people to do things for you is kind of the opposite of being a parasite. I think for the metaphor to work better there needed to be a suggestion that the Parks paid like crap, but at one point Ki-Woo explicitly says otherwise. Also, I am APPALLED that no one (that I've seen) is talking about the fact that we have a man in his early twenties pursuing a relationship with a fifteen year old??? What the fuck? I am completely baffled by that, and it was completely unnecessary.

petitesuite, that's one of the things I liked about the movie -- the Kims were not presented as heroes and the Parks were not really villains. In fact, one aspect that I thought was really clever: {Spoiler}By showing how the Kims screwed over the former driver and the former housekeeper, Parasite also satirized how the working class turns on each other before they will turn on the wealthy -- it showed how class warfare also takes place WITHIN classes. Whether they are nice people or not has nothing to do with the reality of their needs (such as the Kim family losing their home in the flood or the housekeeper needing to feed her husband). Just as whether the wealthy people are nice or not has nothing to do with the fact that the Parks' dog eats better than some of the working class people in the movie.
As for the age gap relationship, I think that fits with the above -- showing how unscrupulous Ki-woo is. I don't think it gets as much comment because the movie doesn't really try to present it as a positive thing, we're not meant to approve or cheer for that relationship at all.
