A friend said Eric Andre should host it. I'll take Hannah Gadsby.

My choice would be for no hosts, no skits, no bits that make the ceremony longer. Just have presenters, musical performances, acceptance speeches, and memorial reel. The whole awards show genre is dying. Ratings drop every year. Time to think more modern. All people care about is the redcarpet and the winners. Give people what they want--a tight 2 hour show. So much this. I'm always confused by the Oscars. Year after year, people complain (or maybe I'm just listening to the wrong people) that the show is too long and there are too many needless clip packages/montages/performances/etc. Cut out all that extra stuff except for the memoriam segment and the song nominee performances, and just give the winners longer to speak. I'd argue that the Oscars drum up way more viewer and viral interest from some wildly emotional speech than they do from cutting off someone at the 30-second mark to make room for a 90-second clip tribute to "the history of puppets in film."

I've just taken a look at the noms for the Critics' Choice Awards just to get a feel for awards season as I haven't followed it too closely this year.....and it's the same as always, despite all the talk: only male directors, one female screenwriter, actors of color shoved off to supporting categories (Rami Malek seems to be the only safe bet for a non-white lead acting nom at the Oscars?). You'll never learn, Hollywood. Also, critics piss me off. There.

I read about the Golden Globe nominations this morning. I have an unpopular opinion here, but I really, REALLY didn't like Crazy Rich Asians, and Constance Wu getting nominated? Her acting was absolutely nothing special in that. People point to the mahjong scene and her "epic" takedown of Nick's mom, and I'm like, "Um, that was the most cliche speech ever." "For the first time in my life, I know I'm enough!" ...so you are saying you got a PhD and a tenured position at a university teaching economics, were raised by a single mother and probably got lots of scholarships along the way, but it took you breaking up with your rich boyfriend to make you feel like "enough"? Much feminism there.
Also, that movie was loaded with Asian stereotypes. If it had been directed by a Caucasian people would be screaming that it was racist, but because it was directed by an Asian it somehow makes stereotypes okay. I guess I can understand poking fun at yourselves, self-deprecating humor and all that, but...I don't know. I don't think that movie did much to help the way people view Asian people except to cast Asian men as being sexy. It still shows Asian women as either dragon ladies, crazy nutty Aunties, or bitchy golddiggers.
Sorry y'all. I have feelings about this movie. Didn't live up to the hype at all, IMHO. The only reason it wasn't a complete fail was Awkwafina.

Just read an article about SAG noms. SAG managed to almost completely shut out women of color this year. I.....don't even know what to say at this point.

It's mentioned in the Madge thread, but Lady Gaga is likely to not win an Oscar for A Star is Born. She will receive a nomination but will not win.
Me? I think it's down to Viola Davis and Nicole Kidman this year.

I'll be happy if anyone in Widows gets nominated, it got shut out of the SAG Awards so I'm a bit worried the movie will get snubbed at the Oscars too.

The Oscars still don't have a host. Personally, I liked Jimmy Kimmel, but he would need to have Matt Damon at the ceremony. I also loved Amy Poehler and Tina Fey when they did the Golden Globes together. But at this point, there's little chance any decent comedian will agree to do it because they will have zero time to prepare.
And when are they going to get the hint about cutting out all the filler? For as long as I have been watching the Oscars, everyone complains about all the filler and all they do is keep adding more of it while cutting the speeches down.
The Academy is obsessed with keeping the Oscars as the most special of all the awards shows, and they are turning into the least special. I'm probably going to keep doing what I did last year and just watch the Golden Globes and then be done with it for the year. It was a blessing last year when my power went out and I didn't have to sit through four hours of the Oscars honoring movies that I either had no interest in seeing or actively hated.
