Could not give a flip about the Oscars this year.

I am really really pulling for Bridesmaids to win Best Original Screenplay but the Academy sure does love Woody. I really enjoyed Midnight in Paris, though, so I wouldn't be crushed if it won.
I'm not actively rooting *against* any actor or film this year (except Extremely Loud, because, really?) which is rare.

If they get rid of the tech awards then they might as well not bother. We have a dozen other awards shows that act like the only people who make movies are the actors, and sometimes the writer and director. I don't particularly care if it's "boring" for a lot of people who are only tuning in to see what people are wearing - for people who really care about film, we know who those "nerdy dudes" are, and what they brought to those films, and we think their awards matter. I don't mean to slam anyone here, but the Oscars aren't - and shouldn't be - the Golden Globes or the SAGs. Editing and cinematography and costume design and art direction and all the others matter. And if it's a choice between a streamlined Oscar ceremony that cuts all of those awards and is televised, and one that doesn't get strong enough ratings to stay on the air but treats all the nominees equally, I'll take the latter. I'll take this as a slam against me. I LOVE film. I love seeing what people on both sides of the camera can do to express themselves artistically and the immense collaborative effort involved in creating a movie. I buy film scores regularly, have a bunch of books about movies, and have a 500+ strong film library (and none of it illegally downloaded!). I can totally nerd out discussing cinematography and costuming. That being said, tech categories still don't make great TV. As talented as she is, no one is going to be ecstatic to see Sandy Powell win her umpeenth Oscar. The Oscar chat thread on this very message board will not go into overdrive when the FX guys from Rise of the Planet of the Apes win the Visual Effects Oscar tonight, and I love that movie's FX and am supporting it. There is an entirely separate Oscar tech award show where the really obscure awards are given out for people who have created new software and filmmaking technologies. What they do is a great achievement but I wouldn't watch that ceremony. I'll enjoy seeing their results on the big screen.

hmm, okay I'll go first: Sup. Actor: Christopher Plummer Sup. Actress: Octavia Spencer Actor: Jean Dujardin Actress: Viola Davis Original Screenplay: Midnight in Paris Adapted Screenplay: Moneyball Director: Martin Scorcese Picture; The Artist I agree with most of these. I'd change the screenplay awards to Adapted: The Descendants (I don't see Sorkin winning two years running and The Descendants is the only other big nominne that won't win in the other big categories). Since the screenplay awards are usually the consolation prize for not getting picture or director, it will go to a movie with a lot of big noms. Original: Brisedmaids. The screenplay category is also the only one where comedies consistently win (Juno, Little Miss Sunshine). And Woddy Allen hasn't won anything in a really long time. (And other than Penelope Cruz, neither have his movies).

There's some talk going on about an alleged The Artist backlash kicking in but I think that (if true) is coming too late. Dujardin and the film itself are so winning this. It'd be totally crazy if with a Globe, SAG, Bafta and a zillion other awards he suddenly lost against Clooney (which some people are predicting). Scorcese winning over Hazanavicius - now that's an "upset" I can actually see happening. By the way - Fishstick has once again found her way to the Oscars and will apparently present. Yay!! I'm really looking forward to tonight. I don't mind Crystal as a host at all. I do mind Cirque du Soleil though.

Sup. Actor: Christopher Plummer Sup. Actress: Octavia Spencer Actor: Brad Pitt (want to win), Clooney (will win) Actress: Viola Davis Original Screenplay: Bridesmaids Adapted Screenplay: Moneyball Director: Terrance Malick (maybe Woody or Marty) Picture; The Tree of Life
Okay here are my guesses. I know Pitt probably won't win, but I'm going for a shake-up and maybe the votes between Clooney and Dejardin will split it. I also think Tree of Life will win more than people expect.

I think people (not Greecies, per se) forget that some of the "lesser" categories sometimes give the best/most memorable speeches. "I don't believe in God but I believe in Billy Wilder, so I'd like to dedicate this to him." Or Michael Moore's rant.
For anyone laying bets in the shorts categories, you get a bundle of the live-action or animated shorts at iTunes for $8.
If Lubezski doesn't win, I will pull a Kanye. I still can't believe he didn't win for Children of Men.

Oh, I'm hoping for shakeups myself. I would love for Brad to win, and, since it's a career Oscar they're (probably) giving to Plummer, than I prefer Max von Sydow for his career in The Exorcist, Pelle the Conqueror, Hannah and Her Sisters, 3 Days of the Condor and Flash Gordon over Plummer, IMO. And I actually saw EL&IC.
Surprises are always good.

Luckily he won't be there so if he wins I won't have to look at his disgusting face. I'd love it if Max von Sydow won, he's awesome.
